Are you interested in getting into the Practical/Tactical shooting sport? Are you looking for ways to shoot from unusual positions more safely? Marcus Blanchard’s Practical Shooter’s Guide is a How-To Guide for Unconventional Firing Positions. Blanchard’s book focuses on the shooting skills you need to win in tactical competitions like PRS matches, unlike almost all other “how to shoot” books.
Blanchard offers clear guidance on shooting from high angles, roof-tops and barricades. Blanchard advises that you must train for these types challenges. “I believe the biggest factor in improving the average shooter’s shooting ability isn’t necessarily the equipment; it’s how the shooter approaches obstacles, and how they properly train for them.”
Blanchard also provides excellent tips for shooting fundamentals. Here’s an example.
Blanchard on Trigger Control The most common mistake I have seen is “slapping” the trigger. The trigger is always hovering just above the finger. When the shooter decides it is time to fire, they quickly pull the trigger to the rear and’slap the trigger’. The trigger is never pulled in the same spot by the finger. This causes a sympathetic contraction in the rest of your hand that can cause unwanted movement of the bullet before it exits the muzzle.
Marcus Blanchard is the author. Blanchard, a Marine Corps veteran, is a regular Top 10 finisher at Precision Rifle Series events. Blanchard was ranked 8th in the PRS series overall at year’s conclusion. Blanchard won the New Mexico Precision Rifleman’s Championship in 2016.

Practical Shooter’s Guide Recommends 6.5 Guys
Blanchard’s book has been reviewed by the 6.5 Guys and they highly recommend it: “What’s the best book for the beginner shooter who wants long range precision rifle? Or the intermediate shooter looking to improve his scores?” The Practical Shooter’s Guide is especially useful because it covers firing from different positions and props in long-range precision rifle [events]. This knowledge is missing in traditional books, where the shooter is often slung up and shooting at paper targets. Marcus… provides extensive information about shooting from rooftops, reverse rooftops and side slopes, as well as tank traps, barricades, tank traps, and other obstacles. This type of information is difficult to find. We consider ourselves to be fairly knowledgeable shooters, and this book provided us new and useful information. CLICK HERE to read the 6.5 Guys REVIEW.
Precision Rifle Marksmanship
Another great book for PRS/NRL shooting, Precision Rifle Marksmanship The Fundamentals by Frank Galli (founder of SnipersHide.com).
Frank Galli, a former USMC scout-sniper, explains that while precision rifle marksmanship is not a science, there are techniques that can make the difference between great marksmanship and good marksmanship. It is crucial to understand why a bullet hits or misses its target at ultra-long ranges.
Galli’s explanations on how to understand and compensate wind speed and direction are superb. Galli provides great wind-reading advice in this book.
Galli’s 2020 treatise was published four years earlier than Blanchard’s book. It also includes more modern gear and equipment. Galli’s book covers precision marksmanship basics using an easy-to-understand method. Galli’s live marksmanship classes use the same instruction process as this book (CLASS REPORT HERE).
This well-illustrated 272-page book, published in 2020, covers the most recent equipment (scopes and LRFs as well as magazines, bags, bipods and tripods) that tactical competitors use in PRS/NRL type matches.
