Mexico Sues Gun Manufacturers
Strategically, the suit was filed in Boston, a federal court located near America’s famous Gun Valley. According to The Washington Post, the suit names Smith & Wesson and Barrett, Beretta Glock, Glock, and Colt’s Manufacturing.
The lawsuit claims that U.S. firearm manufacturers are aware of the fact their products are trafficked in and used in illegal activities against the civilian population of Mexico. This is according to a Foreign Ministry document, The Washington Post reported.
According to The Washington Post, “Nevertheless, they continue to prioritize economic benefit and use marketing strategies for weapons that are evermore lethal without mechanisms of security, traceability, or traceability.”
According to The Washington Post, the lawsuit seeks financial damages that could reach up to $10 billion. The lawsuit also calls for tighter control on arms sales and enhanced security features. The lawsuit also calls on American companies to conduct studies and media campaigns to stop arms trafficking.
Mexico’s lawsuit also targets alleged American gunmaker marketing techniques. The Washington Post reported that the lawsuit focused on a Colt.38 Super with Emiliano Zapato’s image engraved on it. It claims that the same pistol was used by an assassin to murder Miroslava Breach, an investigative journalist.
According to The Washington Post, “Mexico denounces these promotional practices, as well as other examples of negligence like multiple weapons sales for a single buyer and the absence of background check,” said Foreign Ministry documents.
2A advocates will no doubt point out the Fast & Furious scandal in which the ATF was implicated in allowing illegal guns across the border. Although no satisfactory conclusion was reached from these investigations, firearm companies, protected by the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act can help to steer the discussion towards better answers about the federal government’s past involvement in illegal gunrunning.
