Nashville Shooting Has Biden Admin Seeking Wrong “Solutions”

It seems that anti-gun advocates at all levels call for stricter gun ownership restrictions every time a mentally ill person resorts to mass murder to vent frustrations or mental problems. This happens before the final body count has been announced by the news media. This was the case in the case of the shooting at a Nashville, Tennessee Christian elementary school in March. Three children and three adults were killed by the evil former student.

Nashville Shooting Spurs the Wrong “Solutions”

Our thoughts and prayers go out first to the victims and their families. It was a horrible tragedy and we are devastated by the loss of innocent lives. All Americans should strive to end such violence.

However, promoting the wrong “solutions to the problem does not solve it. In this instance, the push for restrictive gun legislation was immediately triggered by news reports reporting that the mass killer had brought two “assault guns” into the school during the attack.

After the shooting, President Joe Biden immediately urged Congress to ban so-called “assault weapon” weapons.

Later in the day, White House Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre increased Biden’s request and added a few restrictions to the president’s wish list.

Jean-Pierre asked at a press conference, “How many more kids have to die before Republicans in Congress will act to pass an assault weapons ban; close loopholes within our background check system; and to require safe storage of guns.”

Three Knee-Jerk Proposals

These three suggestions relating to this shooting show why the knee-jerk reaction after each mass killing wouldn’t have made any difference.

Although the killer used semi-auto firearms, which Biden calls “assault weapon”, any gun can kill six people in the time that police took to arrest him.

The real miracle is the fact that no one else was injured or died. Teachers and staff locked doors and kept children hidden. Aside from that, would someone willing to murder schoolchildren in mass murder if such guns were “banned”?

Furthermore, banning semi-auto rifles that are so popular is an infringement of the Second Amendment right to keep & bear arms. This is not only my opinion, but also the opinion the U.S. Supreme Court.

These rifles are in high demand and have been in circulation for over 24 million. This is the threshold that was set by the Supreme Court in the Heller decision.

Biden’s goal for so-called universal background checks would not have stopped the attack. (I say “so called” because criminals would ignore it like they do other laws, making it far less universal.

After the murders, police officials revealed that the suspect had legally bought seven guns from five different shops. All guns were purchased after background checks.

Most gun owners are well aware that safe storage laws apply to their guns. No matter if they keep their gun on their person, in their car, or in their home, it is safe to store it.

It is hard to imagine how Biden and his communications director could have believed that any storage law would have prevented the 28-year old killer from accessing the guns used in the attack.

Get tough on schools

It would be possible to stop such attacks without trespassing on the rights of lawful Americans by making schools more difficult targets. Make sure that students and staff are protected at all times.

Following the murders, Chief John Drake of Nashville Metro Police gave an update to the media. He stated that he believes these measures saved some lives on the morning of the murders. Drake stated that investigators had determined that the suspect had intended to attack a different target. Drake stated that Drake was unable to attack the target because of Drake’s threat assessment and too much security.

Moreover, you may have noticed that we try not to use the terms used in mainstream media to describe the killer. You might have heard terms like “active shooter,” “mass shooter,” or “school shooter”.

These terms are meant to draw attention to the gun used, rather than to the criminal who committed the crime. We prefer “Killer” or the “murderer” because it is more precise and doesn’t have an anti-gun connotation.

We can all debate the meaning of the word “evil” and the implications. However, it is difficult to argue that someone who enters a school and kills innocent children and adults does not fall under the category of evil.

The only people who obey gun laws are law-abiding. However, restricting firearm access for the law-abiding would not stop evil murderers from killing other human beings. This is why calls for further restrictions are misguided.
