New Mexico Governor fails to present facts in push for gun control

Michelle Lujan Grisham, the New Mexico Governor, knows where to go for a fawning media and a willing viewing audience to support her gun control platform.

Gun Control New Mexico Governor Fails Basic Firearm Facts

Gov. Lujan Grisham appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe only days after a mentally disturbed 18-year-old murdered three innocent Americans. She knew that the host would not correct her lies and false statements about firearms or the firearm industry.

That was probably her goal. It’s sadly standard operating procedure in much of the “mainstream” media and journalism that passes for mainstream today.

Facts and Details

Gov. Lujan Grisham is well known for her support of gun control restrictions. In 2019, she was considered as Joe Biden’s running-mate. The Governor’s platform includes a ban on the sale, transfer, and possession of Modern Sporting Rifles in New Mexico.

Since 1990, there have been more than 24 million sold. This means that they are more common than Ford F-150 pickups. I’d bet you wouldn’t be able to drive five minutes through New Mexico without seeing a Ford F-150.

New Mexico’s Governor began with false accusations about “weapons” of war to demonize any lawful ownership. It was a result of the crazed actions of a single, mentally disturbed person.

“This is an instrument of war…Frankly no one who isn’t a member of the military…or a trained police department…should own a automatic weapon,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham stated. “There’s no reason to own a one of those.”

The governor said that she is still searching for answers after the tragedy. This is a common example of how gun control advocates rush to restrict the rights of Americans. She’s specifically looking for answers which indict the gun and not the criminal.

The AR-15 is not an automatic Firearm

She admitted, “I don’t know any details yet.”

Here’s one. The AR-15 is not an automatic weapon. The governor ignores or doesn’t care to lie about the facts.

Modern Sporting Rifles are not automatic weapons as the governor claims. MSRs are semiautomatic rifles and use the same one-trigger-pull-one-round-expended firing technology that has been in existence for over a century.

The same technology is also used in thousands of different handguns and shotsguns. Millions of law-abiding Americans use semiautomatic firearms every day for self-defense and hunting. It’s their constitutional right to do so.

Automatic firearms are heavily regulated by local, state and federal regulations. This includes the 1968 Gun Control Act as well as the 1934 National Firearms Act.

Gun Control’s Favored Lies

Gov. Lujan Grisham answered all questions with the goal of dumping any gun control priorities that she could come up with. It wouldn’t be a successful media interview if she didn’t repeat one gun control’s favorite lies: that the firearms industry is immune from lawsuits.

“We’re also looking into, you know, legislation which didn’t pass in our last legislative session to go after the gun manufacturers,” added the governor.

She’s talking repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. President Biden claims that firearm manufacturers are “immunity from lawsuits”, but they are not.

Gov. Lujan Grisham should be shown the fact checks done by Washington Post PolitiFact CNN Associated Press and others, who all found the claim to be false.

PLCAA, a bipartisan law signed by President George W. Bush, codifies the fundamental principles of tort laws. It prohibits lawsuits against firearm industry members by those who wish to blame them for the criminal use of lawfully purchased, non-defective guns by third parties or criminals.

The governor of New Mexico has vowed to continue trying to repeal the PLCAA, but it’s not surprising that the effort failed.

Age-Based Ban

In this country, an American who turns 18 is considered an adult by the law. As a result, they have full access to their constitutional rights. They can vote, marry and have children. They can also serve in the military.

They can make their own decisions. This includes buying a gun for self-defense or any other legal reason. Gov. Lujan Grisham is trying to change this.

The governor said, “I am concerned about young people having access to guns at all.” “I think that we need to increase that age. I’m going ask for it again and expect to be successful in the legislature.”

The governor might want to look around and see what the demand is. Florida passed a law banning the sale of firearms to anyone aged 18-20. This is being challenged in court in NRA V. Bondi.

NSSF filed a brief amicus in support of NRA’s petition to rehear the case en banc. The brief argued that the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding individuals to keep and bear weapons for self-defense include the right to obtain those arms.

Pushing for Gun Control that has already Failed

The list of gun control measures that Gov. Lujan Grisham’s list of gun control restrictions was long. California and other states like Illinois and New York, which are her neighbors, already enforce nearly all of the goals she listed. Criminals continue to ignore the law in these states.

Gov. Lujan Grisham needs to be more aggressive in pursuing criminals and holding those responsible for their crimes accountable, rather than pushing for unconstitutional laws which will be ignored by New Mexicans and only affect those who already follow the law.
