It almost feels like New Yorkers are being punked. Worse, it seems to have the attitude of throwing things at walls and seeing what sticks. It is a clear sign that the antipolice rhetoric of recent years has been a complete failure. RELATED STORY New York Increases Gun Control After the Shooting of Two Officers. NYPD Disbands Previously Disbanded Anti-Gun Units. Following George Floyd’s death in May 2020, there was a call to disband New York City’s Anti-Crime Unit. Dermot Shea, then-NYPD Commissioner, heard the demands and disbanded both units, citing a high number of shootings and complaints. Fox News reports that the anti-crime unit was a remnant of the department’s “stop-and-frisk” era. Shea said that the unit was no longer needed in a department that is now relying on intelligence, data, and tools like DNA and shot-detection to combat crime. The city’s largest police union issued a dire warning shortly after the decision was made. According to Patrick Lynch, President of the PBA, the New York Post reported that “Shooting is on the rise and murders are on the rise, but our leaders have made it clear that proactive policing has become a secondary priority.” They chose this strategy. They will have to deal with the consequences.” Unfortunately, Lynch was right. According to the New York Daily News: “New York’s soul crushing crime surge continued to accompany COVID-19’s soul-crushing pandemic in 2021. Homicides and shootings continued well beyond the pre-pandemic levels of 2019, NYPD data shows. “By Dec. 31, the NYPD had already investigated 485 murders in 2021, 17 more than the 468 in 2020. They continued, “The increase was a 3% rise over 2020 and an enormous 52% jump from prepandemic levels of 2019, when 318 deaths occurred,” they said. Fox News also reported that the NYPD recorded 1,562 shooting incidents for 2021, 30 more than in 2020. This shows that removing anti-crime units did not work out well in New York City. They seem to have worked wonderfully for the criminals. Second Verse, (Almost), the Same as the First. In response to the expected rise in crime, NYPD rebranded its anti-crime units, and began rolling them out. The new “Neighborhood Security Teams” have a more easily identifiable and friendly name. The anti-gun units that were revived have also received more training. Chief of Department Ken Corey said that the officers have been intensively trained in advanced tactics, minimal force techniques, and car stops. “De-escalation, communication skills, courtroom training, and constitutional policing are all essential to all of this,” Chief of Department Ken Corey told the New York Post Friday. The 168 officers will be entering 28 areas that have seen an increase in shootings during the pandemic. After completing their seven-day training, the remaining 300 officers are expected to be rolled in. The New Look: The new Neighborhood Safety Teams will be clearly identifiable by NYPD officers, unlike the plainclothes anticrime unit. It feels more like theatre, despite the absence of undercover operations. CBS News New York’s Mayor Adams said that in 2020, “I think that total elimination is something we should reevaluate.” “Right now, bad people are saying that if you don’t see a white and blue, you can do whatever your heart desires.” Criminals also know that the police are always there to protect them. The new NYPD anti gun units will be easily identifiable from a distance, despite this. According to The New York Post, they will be wearing navy blue tactical pants, black shoes, or shoes with a Polo shirt, quarter-zip sweatshirt, or Neighborhood Safety vest with NYPD clearly written on back and front. Also, patches bearing the officer’s name, shield and rank. These patches will be accompanied by patches that bear the officer’s name and command. Criminals will still be with them as long as they keep guns away from law-abiding citizens. This is exactly how crime thrives.
