December 12, 2021 Forum member Roy Bertalotto installed a nice off-set scope on a bolt gun to assist a sight-challenged shooter. Roy explains: “A friend who shoots left-handed has lost his sight in his left eye. I made him a scope mount so that he could still shoot left-handed but can now use his right eye. Roy’s work in fabrication is outstanding and we are proud of his efforts to help fellow shooters. Roy attached a plate to an existing scope rail at the top of the Rem 700 action. This plate extends a few inches to the right. Roy installed a second scope rail at the bore on the outboard end. The Weaver-based rings can then be clamped to an auxiliary rail on the outboard (right). Caution with Offset Scope Installations
Roy has created a solution that will work for shooters with an optical disability. However, we are happy to note that this is a specialized setup that can cause problems with point-of-impact shift if the gun does not stay level. The horizontal offset (between scope’s optical and bore axes) in this rig can cause significant shifts in point of impact if the rifle has been canted. If a southpaw is open to learning new shooting techniques, it might be better to learn right-handed shooting if the right eye is not the best. If a right-handed shooter cannot see clearly through his left eye, it may be beneficial to learn how to hold the stock and use the trigger with his left hand. The shooter could still use his non-trigger hand to operate the bolt. If the stock is not ambidextrous, a stock swap may be necessary to change from right-hand to leave-hand shooting or vice versa.
