PacNor Barrels can definitely shoot 1.240″ group at 500 yards

It’s not often that you hear about PacNor barrels used in long-range competition. But FORUM member Wes J, aka P1ZombieKiller, proved they can be “lights-out”, thanks to a gunsmith who assembled the rig. Wes upgraded a 6mmBR a few seasons ago for mid-range benchrest matches and varmint competitions. Wes tells: “Since restocking my 6BR… I haven’t had much chance to shoot it since I was playing the 100-200 games. I decided to play some games at 500 yards. I must give a big shout out to my friend (and fellow FORUM Member) ‘PREACHER,’ who did all the chambering and bar work for me. He can make a gun shoot well. The barrel has a PacNor twist of 1:8. My load was 105gr Berger pushed by 29,6 grains of Varget.” According to OnTarget, the five-round group shot by Wes J using his 6BR measured just 1.240″ This is one accurate rig. Five by Five — Five Shot Group at 500 Yards – 1.240″ – 0.237 MOAThis Editor is well-versed in the potential of a PacNor. I have a stainless PacNor SuperMatch with 3 grooves on a Savage 6BR. This barrel shoots quarter-MOA with ease in calm conditions. It also cleans up very easily. The bore is so well finished that I have never had to use abrasives or brush it. It still shoots like new after 750 rounds. I attribute the ease of cleaning to the fact that the lands on a PacNor 3 groove are wide and flat. They are gentler on bullet jackets. My PacNor is a little tighter than most (0.236 land dimensions) and has a lot of choke. I think this helps with accuracy. This works well with my favorite 105gr Lapua Scenars or 103gr Spencers. This Feature Article from our Archives contains more information about my rifle – nicknamed the “Poor Man’s Hammer”. In the hands of my friend Joe Friedrich (and an expert trigger-puller), the Poor Mans’ ham put three shots under 0.200” at TWO HUNDRED yards on a calm day. PacNor 3-grooves are a great choice if you can get a good one. OnTarget Software for Target Measurement

We used OnTarget to measure the 5-shots group in the target. Once you get the hang of plotting shots, this software is easy to use. The latest On Target Precision Calculator v2.25 is FREE for 15 days. If you enjoy it (and we know you will), there is a nominal $11.99 registration charge to activate the software. OnTarget calculates group size (in inches) and distance to the aiming point. It also calculates group vertical height, horizontal scatter, average to center, and group size in MOA. You can measure a target by scanning it or taking a picture of it. To set the scale correctly, you’ll need a known reference. The target had a grid of one-inch squares, so it was simple to set the scale. Once you have selected the bullet diameter and target range, you can simply place the small circles on each bullet hole. The OnTarget software will calculate everything automatically and display the data in an overlay box over the target image. To learn more about OnTarget Software, read AccurateShooter.com’s OnTarget Product Review. This article covers the basics, as well as advanced “power user’ tips. On Target has updated their software since the review was written. The free version has now a time limit.
