If you’re like most people, you are a keen observer of Second Amendment politics. You’re likely to be aware that large physician groups are a significant political force that supports the killing of the right of every American to keep and bear arm. How are they doing in the fight against medical malpractice and gun deaths?
Gun deaths vs. medical malpractice
The American Medical Association (AMA), is a major player in anti-2A politics. Despite a dirty little secret that many members of the association don’t want to tell you about, this is true. Preventable deaths due to medical errors account in large part for American deaths that exceed firearm fatalities.
In fact, more than 250,000 medical errors that result in death each year make it the third leading cause for death in the United States after cancer and heart disease.
It is therefore frustrating that AMA holds its annual meeting every year. Instead of focusing on medical care, they vote for all kinds of gun control schemes. The hot topic this year was banning “ghost weapons,” which is actually a backdoor method to stop hobbyists making their own firearms. This has been happening since before the country was founded.
The AMA and Gun Control
In fact, AMA has supported almost every gun control plan over the years. They support all types of gun control plans, including bans on “assault weapon” and bans on handguns. This is a hypocrisy considering the number of deaths doctors cause.
Simple math shows that doctors kill six times as many people each year due to medical malpractice than from gunshots. This includes accidental deaths, murders, self-defense, and police shootings, among others.
It is difficult to comprehend how much these doctors must have in order to focus on Second Amendment politics. Instead, they should be focusing on reducing the number of deaths due to medical errors.
The Journal of the American Medical Association is a voice for anti-gun advocates. It has been around since the 1990s. George D. Lundberg was the editor of the journal in 1992. He advocated for a national system of gun registration and licensing for gun users and owners.
In 1995, Lundberg made a scathing attack on law-abiding gunowners who were members the National Rifle Association. He stated, “We, the 1990s have as our opposition, the National Rifle Association and many gun owners. And many wife beaters who don’t want to change their behavior.”
The CDC and Gun Control
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is another medical-oriented group that advocates gun control. They will keep you up to date on COVID and monkeypox. They won’t tell you the real dangers of getting treated by a doctor.
The CDC has been advocating for gun control since the 1980s. The head of the organization even spoke out in support of demonizing firearms ownership at the time.
Dr. Mark Rosenberg stated to the Washington Post that we need to change the way we view guns. “Smoking used to be a glamour symbol, cool, sexy and macho. It is now illegal, dangerous, and even banned.
Another CDC official said the following: “We’re going systematically build a case against owning firearms causing deaths. Given the political realities, we’re doing everything possible to make sure that this doesn’t happen.”
“Given the Political Realities” simply means “With the current political reality we can’t push to confiscation… yet.”
This thinking is what led to the entire movement to attempt to reclassify gun violence (actually violent crime) as a public health crisis.
The Misplaced Focus of Physician Groups
One might believe that owning a firearm is extremely dangerous, given all the negative press from doctors’ groups and the “mainstream media”. It isn’t true. Gunshot accidents are very rare in America.
In fact, accidental falls are responsible for 34 times more deaths in the United States each year than accidental gunshot injuries. According to the latest statistics, around 17,000 people are killed each year from such accidents. I have not seen the AMA, CDC, or any media outlets clamoring for a reduction in this number. They’re happy to lobby against your Second Amendment rights.
All lawful Americans would be better off, in the end, if doctors’ groups and medical organizations would focus less on 2A politics and more on policing themselves and improving patient safety.
In today’s politically charged atmosphere, this is unlikely to happen.
