Police are now warning people about the Orbeez challenge on TikTok, which could lead to serious injuries. Remember the Tide Pods Challenge? Not all challenges are just for attention-seeking. Some of the challenges can be dangerous. These challenges all have one thing in common: you can do it alone or with/to friends. Fox News reports that the “Orbeez challenge” encourages people to sneak attack unassigned people using a gel pellet gun. There have been reports of incidents in the Bay Area, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Phoenix and Phoenix. Peachtree Police recently posted on Facebook that teens have modified the beads to make them more painful. They also claim that they can cause permanent injuries. They go on to say that this is a clear violation. “The police department will be pursuing penal charges against all persons caught discharging weapons at other people on city property. It could lead to felony charges, and parents could be held responsible for their children’s actions.” According to the New York Post: “Police from the southern states have warned that the police are taking these shootings seriously, and will bring criminal prosecutions against anyone who is caught firing gel beads at another person.” They continued, “Several teens have been arrested and charged in relation to the Orbeez Challenge shootings.” Many police departments are using Facebook to warn teens that this is something they take seriously. Volusia County Sheriff’s Office describes how dangerous this is becoming and how serious they are taking it. “Recently, deputies arrested an 19-year-old male who shot an Amazon delivery driver in Deltona. He was driving his route when he was hit in the neck and glasses. The shooter also shot a random adult and a 10-year old child in the chest and face. The suspect was arrested by deputies and charged with shooting into an occupied car, child abuse and battery.” Not only are the victims dangerous, but many people have taken up concealed firearms as the country becomes more volatile. People are particularly concerned about the rise in violent crime in many American cities. Even police officers struggle to distinguish between a real firearm from a fake in a split second. Imagine a civilian who isn’t trained and carries a newly acquired CCW. This can lead to disaster. According to the New York Post, the unidentified woman was seen following a car full of teens, when they jumped out and ran towards her with their weapons. Officers were told she was afraid for her life, not knowing if the guns were real. She was also left with scarring on her face. The headlines for the next day would have read “TikTok Tragedy” and Democrats would be pushing for more anti-gun legislation. This challenge presents a huge risk and TikTok needs to stop it immediately. Although I don’t support censorship, I believe that if you want to apply the rules for some, you should apply them to all. It prohibits videos “depicting or promoting dangerous acts that could lead to serious injury and death” according to its guidelines. This is a good time to remind TikTok of its community guidelines to ensure no one gets hurt. It doesn’t matter if it is an innocent victim or someone being shot for trying the challenge on the wrong person. Warning to anyone who is thinking about becoming the next TikTok Star with the Orbeez Challenge: Don’t. There are risks for your victims and yourself, but also serious consequences for your future. Captain Scott Allen, Winter Garden Police, gave this warning to Fox 35 Orlando readers regarding the challenge: “These children think it’s funny. They are violating the law. They are committing battery. A felony charge could be filed if the pellet injures the person enough to cause severe skin damage. These things won’t go away. Could impact your future.” This old joke is about how to get to Carnegie Hall. Practice, practice, practice. These stunts won’t impress anyone. Find something you’re good at and practice until your skills are great. This is amazing.
