Close “Home invasion” is a terrifying crime that is distinct from burglary. Burglary is the act of entering private property with the intent of committing a crime, usually theft. Home invasion is when someone enters a home without permission. Often, the intent is to steal property and commit violence against residents. It is crucial to take preventative measures to stop a home invasion from happening. RELATED STORY Security Systems For Rental Homes to Protect Your Family’s Safety Prevent a House Invasion and Safeguard Your Family. Although the term “home invasion”, was first coined over a century ago it is still classified as a separate crime. Many states don’t have laws that address it. Instead, they concentrate on the crimes committed after criminals have gained entry. This is important because it makes it difficult to track home invasion crime trends. A home invasion can also lead to a sexual assault or a murder. These crimes are more serious because they are more likely to be committed on your “home turf”. Some sobering statistics. Understanding the nature of the problem is the best way to avoid being a victim to a home invasion. It helps to understand some key statistics. A Department of Justice report states that between 2003 and 2007, an estimated 3.7 Million burglaries took place in the United States. An average of 15 per cent of all burglaries were simple assaults. The next most common violent crime was robbery (7%) followed by sexual assault (3%) 28% of violent burglaries involved offenders who were not known to the victims. 61% of offenders were unarmed during violence that occurred while a resident was present. A total of 12% of violent burglaries involved an offender with a gun. In 18% of these cases, the resident allowed the intruder to enter. Similar results were seen in 12% of home invasions where a resident allowed the intruder to enter the home. There are things we can do to decrease our chances of being a victim. Home invasions are a common crime committed by people who are known to be victims. This includes ex-spouses and former partners as well as relatives. A home security system is one of the best ways to do this. According to the National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS), 85% of burglars convicted specifically searched for home security systems. They would look for a safer target if they saw one. This is supported by crime statistics. A burglary is 300% more likely in homes without security systems than in homes with them. Your home will be less attractive to potential intruders the more secure you will be. The security gate and alarm sign send a strong message to potential intruders and can help you prevent them from entering your home. You should take a look at all aspects of your home and identify any weaknesses. Your home will be unattractive if it has an alarm system that is backed up by exterior camera coverage. It provides an early warning system for when you are home and protects your property when you are not. Protect your perimeter According to the FBI, 95% of home intrusions happen through doors while 6% are through windows. Even if your doors are locked with great care, standard door hardware will not withstand a hard kick. Hardening your front door is the best way to stop this type of entry. First, choose a strong, solid-wood or steel-sheathed front door that does not have windows. Hang it using heavy-duty hinges that are longer than the standard three-inch deck screws. The long screws will pass through it into the framing behind. Solid hardware must be paired with good locks. This reinforced strike plate has more holes for mounting screws and is larger. Extra-long screws attach it to the door jamb’s structural framework. These locks are weak and easy for thieves to defeat. Install a name-brand deadbolt lock of high quality with a 1-inch bolt throw. If your door isn’t steel-sheathed you can reinforce the area around the lock by installing a metal reinforcement. This supports the stile where it is weakest, where it is drilled, in order to accept the lock hardware. Dead-bolt locks must be securely attached to the door frame in order to function properly. This is not possible with the tiny strike plate that comes with most locks. Replace it with a longer, more secure strike plate. These plates are usually 8-10 inches in length and have multiple mounting holes. Use extra-long screws to secure the plate into the door frame. Security gates A security gate is a great way to increase your front-door security. It is made of strong steel and can double as a screen door. This allows fresh air to enter without compromising your security. The security gate covers the door and the adjacent window, creating a strong, lockable barrier that is deterrent and secure. This flaw weakens door frame structure and compromises door’s function of barrier. Home invaders can also easily open the window to gain entry to the door. This danger is eliminated by a security gate that covers both the door AND the window. It sends a strong deterrent signal. It allows you to deal directly with visitors, but also provides a physical barrier. This prevents “push-in” home invasions. Patio Doors and Windows Patio doors and windows are weak links in a home’s defenses. They should be addressed. The traditional broomstick-in-the-track method works, but many criminals are wise to it. They know how to “rock” the sliding doors to remove this barrier or lift it off with a piece wire. A purpose-designed security bars are stronger and more reliable than a standard broomstick for securing sliding doors. A purpose-designed security bar wedged between the door frame and the door is a better way to prevent home invasions. This creates a stronger barrier that cannot be removed or overthrown as easily as a broomstick or dowel rod. Similar attention should be given to ground-level windows and second-story windows with easy access (like those with balconies or roofs). Sliding windows must have locks that stop outside entry. You can also add wooden dowels between your closed window and the frame’s opposite edge. I prefer 3/4-inch or 1-inch hardwood donwels that are cut to the right length for a snug fit. Drill a hole at one end to allow for quick removal (e.g., when the window is being used as an exit during a fire) and attach a short loop made of parachute cord. This handle gives you a firm grip to pull the dowel out. This handle makes every dowel a useful impact weapon in case an intruder gains entry. Cut hardwood dowels can be used to secure sliding windows. A cord loop allows for easy removal in an emergency. This could include using the dowel to make a weapon. It is possible to be shocked by the fact that over half of home invasions begin with a criminal breaking through unlocked doors. Good. You should take advantage of this and lock your doors regularly. Make sure you invest in top-quality locks and hardware. Don’t lend your keys to anyone. Change all locks when you move into a new house to stop former residents and their friends from using your keys. Learn how to use your alarm system properly and take full advantage of its capabilities. It can be turned on when you are home to serve as both an alarm system and deterrent. Do not open your door to an unknown visitor. You can use security gates, intercoms, and windows to communicate with the person while keeping a physical barrier in place. You can use a security gate to talk to unknown visitors and prevent a home invasion. Be cautious about allowing anyone to enter your home. Don’t trust them. If someone you know starts acting like a criminal, they are a criminal. Don’t hesitate to defend yourself. You can use the security gates you have to protect yourself, such as a window to engage unknown persons. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
