This is especially true if you have experience with older models and can appreciate the modifications made. Primary Weapons Systems (PWS), has taken their AR rifle concept to the next level with its MK1 MOD 2M series of piston ARs. RELATED STORY PWS PW111 Pro Pistol – An Affordable, Piston Driven Pistol in.223 Wylde. The PWS MOD 2-M Series PWS literature clearly outlines the thought process behind its Ars. This reflects a deep appreciation for the reliability of AK-47’s long-stroke operation and deep-rooted experience using M4/M16 ergonomics. A quick glance at the PWS AR bolt carrier group will reveal that PWS has a different approach to AR operational methods. Different Strokes The AK-47 method of connecting the bolt carrier to the operating rod for long-stroke piston operation is an example of this. Short-stroke operation involves a more complex arrangement of gas imparting power to an oprod that impacts another part the mechanism that acts upon the bolt carrier. The long-stroke piston of the PWS AR connects directly with the bolt carrier group. PWS believes its long-stroke piston AR design is a better than the legacy gas-impingement design. Not to mention the improvements over other AR designs with short-stroke pistons. This is especially true when barrel lengths are shorter and/or suppressors are added. Performance and Reliability PWS product improvements address reliability and performance issues that can be caused by direct-impingement designs. The PWS long stroke gas system isolates the action from heat, fouling, and other factors. This is especially important when compared to the gas impingement method that dumps gas directly into the action. This is based on anecdotal evidence that PWS bolt carriers can be handled after long strings and require only a quick wipe-down. This is in contrast to their direct-impingement counterparts which require more detailed cleaning. The PWS MK1 series does not require tools for disassembly, and requires less maintenance than other piston systems. PWS designed a forward-canted, “dwell” chamber that is located in front of the operating piston head. This is a significant improvement on the more traditional rearward or horizontal angles used in gas vectoring. The forward cant helps reduce carbon buildup on an operating rod. Anyone who has used the AR-15 knows the cleaning methods for the PWS. The PWS long stroke piston was developed from early PWS short stroke conversions. It uses fewer and harder components. The long-stroke AR method is supported by those who believe it doesn’t have multiple parts banging against each other. Smoothening the recoil impulse is achieved by the PWS long-stroke piston operation. Under the firing round’s impulse, the PWS bolt carrier group and operating rod move together. This reduces the possibility of cam pin wear and carrier tilt/bounce, which can be a problem with some short-stroke AR piston designs. The PWS long-stroke design is simpler to operate than the short-stroke ARs. The parts used are also larger and more durable. Rifle & Pistol PWS is constantly improving its design. We are now able to explore the PWS latest offerings with their MK116 MOD 2M rifle and MK111 Mod 2-M braced pistol. Both are chambered in.223 Wilde. (More information on the.223 Wylde will follow.) PWS uses forged receivers for both the upper and lower ends. PWS believes that proper forging techniques create strong, lighter receivers by aligning grains throughout. PWS equips the MK116 Mod 2-M rifles equipped with a Bravo Company USA pistol grip, buttstock. The SB Tactical SBA3 brace is featured on the MK111 MOD2-M pistol. The forward assist was removed from the PWS MK1 Mod 2-M pistol. The upper and lower receivers have lightening cuts. PWS also removed the forward assist, made lightening cuts to the upper and lower receivers, and installed a PicLok frontend. The PWS MOD 2M has a three-setting adjustable gas regulator. The PWS MOD 2-M MK1 weapons have three-setting adjustable gas regulators that can be accessed through the handguard. To increase strength and rigidity, the PWS EBT is impact extruded from 7075 Aluminum and then mil-spec anodized. The Ratchet Lock, a PWS design, is used with the EBT to remove the need to stake the castle nuts. The Ratchet Lock is solid, but can be easily removed if necessary. The buffer tube has an extended lip to reduce the possibility of carrier tilt. Radian Raptor Ambidextrous Charge Handle gives the user a lot of purchase options to operate the bolt group. .223 Wylde Chambering. A brief explanation of the.223 Wilde chambering is necessary. The.223 Wylde was created as a match chamber for semi-automatic rifles. It can accommodate both 5.56mm and.223 Rem ammunition. It has a shorter throat to improve accuracy and is relieved in its case body. The.223 Wylde is in effect a hybrid. It splits the difference between the 5.56mm Rem and the.223 Rem while offering greater reliability and accuracy. MK116– The Long of It A Riton X5 Tactix 1-6x24mm optic was mounted to the PWS MK116 MOD2-M. The Riton X5 Tactix has daylight bright illumination and capped, resettable turrets. The X5 Tactix 1-6×24 illuminated first-focal plane (FFP) TF-1 reticle provides quick, accurate ranging based upon target size. It also features a unique diamond-shaped reticle with spaced hash marks and bullet drop compensation (BDC). The Riton X5 Tactix was developed from combat experiences, which were a catalyst for the development of new optics. It is a better optic than fixed-power magnified or non-magnified red dots. The X5 Tactix has a 1X illuminated reticle that allows for quick target acquisition from close range, with both eyes open. The knob can be quickly turned to 6X for longer, more precise shots. Force multiplier: The ability to access 6X while still being capable of using an illuminated dot at oneX is possible. The MK116 Testing and Evaluation (T&E), using the PWS MK116 rifle and a Riton X5 Tactix optical, produced consistent hits of 500 yards on steel targets at Echo Valley Training Center. The PWW MK116 rifle with a RitonX5 Tactix 1-6x24mm optical could be the solution to many roles, including DMR, general-purpose patrol rifle, and CQB/entry weapons. The PWS MOD 2-M showed excellent accuracy using Black Hills Ammunition 69g Match and 55g FMJ; Federal M855 62g FMJ; Hornady 55g TAP and Sig Sauer 77g Elite OTM. The measured velocities varied from 2,946 to 2,660 feet per seconds (fps) depending on the bullet weight. The MK116 MOD 2-M, a 16-inch-barreled, 6.5 pound weapon, demonstrated its versatility by performing within EVTC’s 100-yard bays, Jungle Walk range and back at the prepared firing line with targets placed out to 370 meters. The MK116 MOD2-M was equipped with the FSC compensator. This provides flash suppression and recoil reduction. The port design prevents flash from entering your optics and line-of-sight, while reducing distracting overpressure that can be felt with other compensators. Numerous drills were conducted with the MK116 MOD2-M. These included magazine changes and moving between barricades to simulate cover. The MOD 2-M’s flared magazine hole allows for efficient magazine changes. Several of our more dynamic drills during the T&E demonstrated the MK116 MOD2-M at its best. The gun displayed unrelenting reliability, even after being fired multiple magazines simultaneously. The short version of the MK111 is that the 11.85-inch barrel AR of the PWS MK111 MOD 2M works and functions at the exact same level as ARs with larger barrels. The PWS long-stroke piston is here to help. The MK111 is an ideal choice for CQB roles due to its shorter than normal barrel length in comparison to standard M16 or M4 platforms. The 11.85-inch barrel is the best crossbreeding for handling and cartridge performance. The MK111 produces approximately 2,660+ FPS velocity with the 55/62-grain 5.56mm. The MK111 has rail space for solid purchase or accessory additions, as the mission demands. PicLok is a combination M-LOK attachment methods and Picatinny attachment techniques. The MK111 drills were quickly upgraded to dynamic drills that included movement, magazine reloads, and firing from behind cover. Trijicon MRO HD was present. The MRO HD is an extension of the original MRO. It offers a 2-MOA dot as well as a segmented retina more likely to be found in a laser-holographic sight than in a sealed reflex sight. I used the MRO HD with a Trijicon 3X magnifier for certain situations. The MRO HD was made to work with the Trijicon 3X magnifier. The tilt mount allows the Trijicon magnifier to swing out of its way until it is needed. The Trijicon 3X magnifier comes on a tilt-up mounting for maximum flexibility. The MRO HD’s large tube gives a wider field of vision than many other red-dot sights. It is worth considering the combination of the Trijicon MRO HD with 3X magnifier. This enhances performance by offering magnification at longer ranges and pure red-dot. With the PWS MK111, we were able to fire several magazines of ammunition at plate racks and steel targets that were man-sized. This allowed the PWS MK111 to shine. The lightweight MK111 is so effective because it can be used in unconventional positions and around barricades. Buy Right, Cry Once. The PWS MOD 2M AR option is not the most affordable. It is easy to remember the old adage “buy right the first-time”. PWS ARs are designed to maximize combat effectiveness and allow for realistic training at the range. Reliability is the key component of a fighting rifle. It doesn’t matter how powerful or accurate a rifle, if it doesn’t work 100% of the time it becomes an issue. There are many AR-style rifles that are available for purchase, whether it is for individuals, departments, or other entities. PWS’ MK1 MOD 2-M series is certainly worth consideration due to its attention to detail and the high quality of the materials it uses. PrimaryWeapons.com can provide more information.
