Updated 6/29/2023 Looking to keep a lid over your black rifle. Here are some of your best AR-15 suppression options. What are the best AR-15 models and makes? The only thing that may be holding them back is the paperwork and taxes needed to purchase one. It’s safe to say that if you take out the paperwork and taxes, nearly every shooter will have one. Just for curiosity. Even those who are rusty in acoustic engineering basics understand the basic concept of how they function. It’s a big leap from basic knowledge of firearms suppressors and what cans actually do the job. The AR-15 suppressor market is flooded with options. Gear and accessory hounds, fans of the popular rifle have a tough time finding the right device. AR-15 Suppressor PricesLike many things in the world of firearms, there is no definitive answer as to how much it will cost to put a can onto your carbine. There are both cheap and expensive options, it all depends on how much you’re willing pay. Shooters can expect to spend between $400 and $1,500 on most suppressors compatible for an AR-15. There are some exceptions. This is the price of the suppressor itself. On top of that, you will also have to pay $200 for the tax stamp. Not to mention all the time you will spend filling out paperwork and awaiting your can. If you want a more in-depth look a the purchase procedure, we suggest you read our piece on how to buy a suppressor.Suppressor LifespanAs an aside, you’ll get the most for your money out of a great majority of suppressors. A quality-built can is likely to last a very long time. Suppressors made from steel or high-temperature alloys in their baffles could push into the tens or thousands of rounds until they peter out, usually through a crack on the baffle or tube. Modern suppressors that use Inconel or steel baffles are able to withstand extended periods of full-automatic fire. The highest-quality suppressors on the market today are said to have a service life of more than 30,000 rounds.Sound suppressionOf course, you want to know if your investment is worth it. How loud is an AR-15 with suppressor installed? It’s a difficult question to answer because there are so many variables, from the caliber of the shot to the barrel length and environmental conditions. A general idea can be gained by using an M4 style carbine chambered in 5.56 NATO. The gun’s report without a suppressor is around 165 dB. With a suppressor attached, it may be around 135 dB. Not enough to raw dog your ears when at the range, still it’s a notable reduction greatly enhancing your hearing protection.Suppressed AR-15 AccuracyThis leads to another point, namely, despite its name, a suppressor delivers more than simply sound suppression. Recoil mitigation is a fringe benefit, and perhaps the most important one of all, that comes with adding a suppressor. Yes, the cannisters that come with the rifle are already pretty mild, but a can at the muzzle is nothing. This is a positive thing. In general, less recoil equals less muzzle rise. This equates to a faster target reacquisition and therefore the potential for more accurate rapid firing. A suppressor also eliminates muzzle flash which can be used to conceal your position in low-light situations and poison your eyes at night. Best AR-15 SuppressorsYHM Nitro N20Do it all. Yankee Hill’s new NITRO N20 is a can that has a lot to offer. It’s more than just an AR-15 suppressor. It can mute nearly any weapon in your arsenal. Seem impossible to you? The modular suppressor can be used on pistols, light-duty rifles, and even on pistols. It is compatible with a range of calibers from.17 HMR to.308 win. The N20 mounting system is responsible for a large part of the flexibility. You can attach the suppressor using a Nielsen adapter or Phantom Q.D. as well as a variety of direct thread sizes. In addition to this, the can runs in two configurations–7.5-inch long and 5.4-inch short–to adapt your particular firearm and circumstances. As to sound suppression, the titanium unit does a respectable job, knocking down the report of 300 Blackout to 127 dB in its long configuration and 135 dB in its short. The endcap can accommodate a wipe if you need a little more. It doesn’t get more versatile than this. Caliber:.17HMR- 9mm/.308 win.Weight: 6 oz. (Short)/ 10 oz. Thunder Beast tested this full-auto can by firing it through 10 cycles of the SOCOM/SURG schedule, and then retesting it against a new unit. The test suppressor is 1 dB louder. The short, squat unit has a titanium body that is fully welded. It is rated from 5.56 NATO up to.308 RUMS, making it a flexible option. It is not only a suppressor for the AR-15, but also works well on a precision boltgun or AR-10. The welded titanium Dominus SR is light enough to be used on any gun. The Dominus-SR is a bit larger than other options, with a diameter of 1.8 inches. However, it is smaller than most at 6.95 inches and relatively light at 12.5 ounces. Utilizing Thunder Beast’s SR mount system, the Dominus-SR is also incredibly simple to get on and off your gun and offers incredible lock-up.Caliber: 5.56 up to .300 RUMWeight: 12.5 ozDiameter: 1.80″Overall Length: 6.95″Attachment Type: SR MountMaterial: TitaniumMSRP: $1,610thunderbeastarms.comRugged Suppressors SurgeModularity is a catchword often haphazardly tossed around the firearms industry, but it is something the Surge 7.62 truly delivers. The Surge 7.62 can be configured from 9 to 7 inches. It is the perfect package for AR-10 or AR-15 users who want a suppressor that will adapt to any situation. You can have both a short and stealthy suppressor and a long and silent one in ONE device. It’s also flexible in compatibility.Rugged Suppressors’ Surge is a product that lives up to the name. It can handle almost anything north of 5,56mm (thanks interchangeable front caps). How far north? How about.300 RUM? It’s also full-auto rated and belt-fed, which means that it can handle any ammunition you throw at it. Rugged Suppressors did not skimp on the materials used to construct the Surge. The hush tube is a bit heavy at 21 ounces, but it’s still manageable. The dual taper locking system makes it easy to switch between guns. If versatility and ease of use are at a premium, the Surge is well worth the investment.Caliber: 5.56mm, .30 CaliberWeight: 21 ouncesDiameter: 1.5 inchesOverall Length: 7.5, 9 inchesAttachment Type: Fast-AttachMaterial: Stainless Steel, StelliteMSRP: $1,300ruggedsuppressors.comSilent Legion 300 Blackout/6.8 SPC DTAny round can be suppressed, but the .300 Blackout was specifically designed for this purpose. It only makes sense that a suppressor is designed to maximize the performance of the whispering cartridge. Silent Legion was the first to take this route. Its SL-BK was designed to eliminate the signature sound of the.30 caliber cartridge while at the same time not affecting the rifles that it is mounted on. The company has succeeded in both areas. It dampened the Blackout’s sound by up to 32 dB, and it weighs just a little over 14 ounces. Noise reduction is important. (Why else would you purchase a suppressor?) The size and weight of the direct thread can (DT) may be more important than the noise reduction. The SL-BK, which is made of titanium, is as rugged as an AR-15 suppressor should be. It’s a direct-thread (5/8″ -24 2B), so it won’t come off as quickly as some other options. The 6.8-inch can is also compatible with the resurgent 6,8 SPC. And, relatively speaking, the model is fairly economical to boot.Caliber: .300 Blackout, 6.8 SPCWeight: 14 ouncesDiameter: 1.5 inchesOverall Length: 6.63 inchesAttachment Type: Direct ThreadMaterial: TitaniumMSRP: $998silentlegion.comDead Air Nomad LBalance is often the concern when selecting a suppressor. It is important to choose a suppressor that can reduce noise to a manageable volume, without looking imposing when dangling from the muzzle of your rifle. There are situations and times when asymmetry is a factor, with one factor dominating the other. The Nomad L will provide you with the noise reduction you need. The Nomad L is a larger suppressor that can be attached to the end of rifles. It has a greater internal volume, which reduces noise and relieves back pressure. The Nomad L can significantly reduce the noise of a.300 Winchester Magnum. The Nomad L is bigger than most of the other options on this list but it’s still surprisingly unobtrusive. It will add weight and length to your platform, but it is also a very practical option. But stainless-steel and Grade 5 titanium construction, it’s much more practicable than its measurements imply.Caliber: Up to .300 Norma MagnumWeight: 18.3 ouncesDiameter: 1.735 inchesOverall Length: 8.39 inchesAttachment Type: Direct Thread (KeyMo and Xeno Adapter compatible)Material: Stainless Steel and TitaniumMSRP: $999deadairsilencers.comGriffin Armament Paladin 5Unless you’re hoarding away millions in lotto winnings, buying multiple suppressors can become taxing — literally and figuratively. Do-all models are the best because they can suppress multiple guns. Griffin Armament’s all-around small bore wonder is one of the best. Rated for everything from.22 LR up to the explosive.22 250 Rem., the Paladin 5 suppressor is a small caliber jack-of-all-trades. The 6.3-inch user-serviceable unit weighs only 12.5 ounces and features extensive use of 6AL4V Titanium in its components. Griffin Armament uses stainless-steel as well to make a rugged tube, and a baffle that you don’t have to worry about igniting. As for where the rubber hits the road, the Paladin 5, tames a.22 LR report to about 114 dB, and a 5.56 to about 131 dB. As far as an AR-15 suppressor goes, this is about as versatile as it gets–something as adept on your full-strength rifle as it is on your trainer.Caliber: From .22 LR to .22-250 Rem.Weight: 16 ouncesDiameter: 1.5 inchesOverall Length: 6.3 inchesAttachment Type: n/aMaterial: Fast AttachMSRP: $849griffinarmament.comLiberty Zulu Integral 5.56 NATO UpperIntegral suppression is nothing new. The only thing that has changed is that it’s not a semi-custom affair anymore. Liberty Suppressor, one of the latest manufacturers to offer integral suppression, has the Zulu Upper Receivers, which are perfect for those who want to maintain the agility of their carbine. The upper receiver weighs 3 pounds, 11ounces with a 16.6 inch barrel, including the suppressor. This is a great benefit for AR-15 suppressors. It keeps a carbine as manageable and as if the suppressor was not there. Liberty didn’t skimp on the upper. The manufacturer used Aero Precision for its receiver, Odin Works to build the barrel (10.5 inch) and St. Croix Tactical to make the bolt carrier group. Overall, this is a solid build. The integrated suppressed part is made entirely by Liberty and features grade 5 titanium baffles as well as an Inconel blast baffle to provide extra robustness. The built-in can is tuned for 5.56 NATO, and because the suppressor is pinned and welded to the barrel, the upper only requires one tax stamp to purchase.Caliber: 5.56mmWeight: 3 pounds, 11 ouncesDiameter: n/aOverall Length: 16.6 inchesAttachment Type: n/aMaterial: Aluminum, Titanium, InconelMSRP: $2,194libertycans.netDead Air SandmanA standby option nearly the moment it hit the market, it’s difficult to go wrong with the Sandman as an AR-15 suppressor or on any other long-gun. Dead Air’s can is a quality product that performs every time you pull the trigger. It also has some versatility. There are three different lengths available: 5.4-inch K (standard), 6.8-inch S (standard) and 8.9-inchL (long). Each is designed to fit a specific firearm. All three modes will work with an AR, but the S is the most suitable. It provides more than enough noise reduction, but weighs a hefty 17,7 ounces. The weight is a sign of durability. The welded stainless steel/Stellite is fully-auto-rated and can withstand the abuse that is likely to be thrown its way. The mount uses a proprietary muzzle-brake to ensure precision and eliminate the worry of baffle strikes. Sandman cans are popular for many reasons. You’ll still get more than you paid for. The Omega is compatible with all calibers, from.223 Remington up to.300 Winchester Magnum. It covers all the bases for an AR-15 suppressor. The Omega reduces the subsonic.300 Blackout’s report to around 119dB and a.308 Win. The can is also one of the lighter, smaller options available today. It weighs 14.8 ounces and won’t cause a rifle to be unbalanced. Its 7.08-inch size is not unwieldy, especially for a carbine. The Omega’s diameter of 1.57 inches allows for a clear line-of-sight on most rifles, whether they are aimed using irons or optics. Getting the suppressor onto and off a firearm is almost cheating. The Omega can be mounted the traditional way by using direct-thread on your muzzle. It is easy to switch between guns, or shoot suppressed and un-suppressed. The popular Gemtech suppressor is very effective and will make you happy if you are lucky enough to be able to trigger a gun with one. The Dagger is a tough, titanium-made suppressor that’s ready to go anywhere. The suppressor weighs only 14.8 ounces, which is surprising considering its size and ruggedness. This is a compact suppressor. This feature makes the Dagger much more appealing, not to mention practical, size notwithstanding.Given QD systems are all the rage, some might crinkle their nose at having to direct thread the Gemtech suppressor. The system is easier to use, but perhaps not as convenient when you need to swap between guns in a split second. It doesn’t require a proprietary device, so you can relax. It also keeps your gun lean. The Dagger is full auto rated.
