In order to prepare for a survival adventure, you must acquire essential skills and face both physical and mental challenges. Some people may think that survival is a game only for the lazy. The Field Survival class shows that it is an intelligence and resourcefulness test. Randall’s Adventure & Training, a leading provider of top-tier survival instruction, is without a doubt a leader.

What is Field Survival Training (FST)?

As a member of the class on several occasions, I can attest to its intensity. The program is taught in Gallant (Alabama) and lasts for three days. This training is designed for participants to be pushed to their limits. This immersive experience is different from traditional bushcraft or survival classes. It tests your skills in an challenging field setting.

During the course, you will learn essential survival skills such as how to use a knife properly, how to build a fire, how to build a shelter, prepare game, and navigate by day and night. Prepare yourself for significant stressors to simulate a 72-hour scenario. This includes hunger and thirst, as well as lack of gear and personal discomfort.

As you complete your tasks, you will earn food and equipment that will improve your chances of survival. The food and equipment is provided, but electronic devices such as watches, cell phones, and other electronic devices are not allowed.

This is not a class for the faint of heart. You will be required to pass a PT test. To continue the class, you will need to complete a 1.5 mile run in less than fifteen minutes and 25 push-ups or sit-ups within one minute.

Those who do not meet the physical requirements will be denied entry and their tuition will be forfeited. You will receive a class knif to commemorate your accomplishments after completing the class.

This class will provide you with an exciting and challenging experience. This class is not for the weak-hearted!

Survival Training Gear Requirements

Fixed blade knife with sheath

Ferrocerium rod

Dress appropriately for the season. (Be prepared for rain, you will be cold and wet during this course.)

Hiking boots (broken in)

Water container (no Hydration Packs)

Cap or bandana

Mirrored baseplate Compass

Pace count beads

During the course, no other personal gear is allowed, including watches, cameras, and phones.

The most important piece of equipment is a positive attitude and the ability of moving forward despite the hardship. You will not be able to complete this course without a positive attitude.

Physical Training (PT ) Time

It is important to be physically fit and have basic survival knowledge. It can be physically demanding to be stranded, swim to shore, climb a mountain or spend a night in the wilderness. The PT section is designed to simulate such exhaustion, and prepare people for it.

During the first class, each student was given an egg. If the egg was broken, they had to do extra physical training. The importance of team dynamics and hydration was stressed. Physical activities included carrying an actual life-size dummy, and a pole-carrying activity. The instructor would give PT for minor infractions, or to engage the student.

Egg Check

Students were required to conduct regular egg checks in order to determine the breakage rate. PT was then allocated accordingly. The students returned to the classrooms for navigation and PowerPoint training.

They continued with the next activity without a snack break. The navigation course is to familiarize them with the map and the compass, before moving on to the knife, shelter, and fire skills camps.

Jab-Cross Survival

The emphasis is on bare-bones, down-and-dirty survival skills that will help you get through any situation. The class covers knife safety, proper use, shelter building and material selection, primitive spears and traps, fire-building methods, and the basics of fire-building.

The class did not include anything beyond the basics. Survival skills are based on the basics. When we feel tired or have the ‘fight-or-flight’ reflex, they come back to us.

Navigation

The navigation course was carefully planned to guide groups around the training facility. Leaders and pace counters swapped roles to ensure everyone understood each responsibility. In previous sessions, it took some groups over 10 hours to complete this task.

Setting up a Survival Camp

After the teams had been prepared to start, they were given 5 gallon water jugs for collecting their water supply. Then they were given the coordinates for establishing a camp, building a shelter, lighting a fire, etc. They had to use their tools, wood from a forest, and their creativity to do so.

Training and skills continued well into the evening. The first day was over, but additional physically demanding skills and activities continued.

The students were given a set of directions in the early morning hours that led them deep within the woods. The students were given a set of coordinates that led them deep into the woods.

Their challenge? The challenge? To ingeniously engineer an innovative way to transport the heavy drum back into the classroom using only a tire, two metal poles and some rope. The process unfolded slowly and was filled with intricate, meticulous actions. It was fascinating to watch the students work together, their collective intelligence driving the entire project.

The Last Mile

Throughout the day students will learn basic camp skills, signaling and food preparation techniques. They will also be given a quick lesson on how to sew a lock-stitch. Then, they’ll be asked to make shoes with canvas, foam and cordage. Once they have completed the task, they will receive new coordinates for a new camp.

At 2 a.m., they will be woken for another mission. This mission involves simulating the scenario of an airplane that has crashed in a pond. During this mission, they must make a fire in the pond and transport a member who is injured across without falling in.

The final task is to build a bridge over a pond with the materials provided and cross it safely. This challenging day will test teamwork and leadership abilities.

Take this training if you are serious about wilderness survival.
