May 25th 2023 Read the Wind Like A Pro — Smart Advice From Emil Praslick IIIEmil Praslick III has been widely recognized as being one of the world’s greatest wind wizards. He is a master in identifying wind direction and value, and is able to predict wind cycles. Emil Praslick III has won many championships as a coach for the USAMU, and also top civilian teams. Emil, who is a Capstone Precision Group (Berger Lapua, SK and Vihtavuori, Finland) and Team Applied Ballistics employee, explains in the three videos that we are featuring today how to determine wind velocity and direction using a variety indicators. Praslick, now retired from the U.S. Army, was an 18-time National and 2-time World Champion coach with the USAMU.Video ONE: Wind Theory Basics — Understanding “Wind Values” In this video from UltimateReloader.com, Emil explains the basics of modern wind theory. In order to understand the wind’s effect, you must know both its velocity and its angle. Combining these variables gives you the wind value. Emil explains that wind values can change in both speed and velocity. Emil also explains how mirage can reveal wind conditions.Emil explains the use of optics to determine wind direction. The method is to use binoculars, a spottingscope, or a riflescope to look for “Boil”, the condition in mirage where the light waves are rising straight up. When the wind blows directly at you or directly behind you, it will cause your optics to show a vertical, straight-up boil. When you see a vertical boil, the direction your optic is pointing is aligned with the wind flow (either blowing towards you or directly behind you). Video THREE: No Wind Zero Setting In the second video, Emil explains the “No-Wind Zero” and why competitive shooters should understand it and have their sights and optics set to a no-wind starting point before heading out to a match. Emil says that after determining the wind speed and direction you must set your scope to “no wind zero” in order to hit your targets. “Coach of Champions – Emil Praslick III
