Rimfire Competition Ammo Guide for Shooting Sports USA

March 27, 2023Rimfire Competition ammo guide on Shooting Sports USA You’ll want the Shooting Sports USA.22 LR Ammo Roundup, which was released last week. This article includes.22 LR ammunition from Lapua and ELEY, SK RWS, Norma Wolf, and Aquila. There is also a detailed discussion on Lapua’s new Super Long Range and Long Range ammo. SSUSA also confirms that SK ammo (made from Germany by Nammo parent of Lapua), and Wolf Match Target ammo are both very good performers for a moderate price. It’s not a matter of choosing between high-end match ammunition and low-priced products. SSUSA explains that.22 LR used to be a very expensive match-grade ammo or a cheap plinking or hunting ammunition. Today, there are many match ammunition options available to suit your budget and firearms. We have had good results with the relatively cheap Norma Tac-22 and the SSUSA article states that SK is a great choice for match ammunition. It comes from Finland and is made for the ever-growing long-range rimfire disciplines. Targets range from 100-300 yards. This ammo is very low in ES and SD numbers, according to Lapua. F-Class John, our friend, recently tested the ammo and found it to perform very well (see video above). Geoff Esterline (Capstone’s Marketing Director) stated that each production lot of Lapua rimfire products is tested for dispersion in 50-round groups. “The results will determine whether it makes Super Long Range packaging or Long Range packaging. “ELEY.22LR Ammunition
ELEY has been a leading choice for.22 LR competition, both benchrest and position shooting. ELEY now has 11 varieties of.22 LR match ammo, ranging from $7 (Benchrest Outlaw), to $20 (ELEY Tenex). If you are interested in rimfire benchrest, you should try some ELEY in the rifle. SK offers a wide range of.22 LR ammunition options that are suitable for a variety disciplines, including NRL22 and Biathlon. SK ammunition is generally cheaper than ELEY Match ammo and offers a better value for money. F-Class John states that it performs well for the price. According to the SSUSA article, eight match-grade.22 LR offerings are made by German manufacturer SK, including two for pistols and one for semi-automatic rifles. One is for frigid winter conditions. “RWS.22 LR Ammunition

RWS ammo is sometimes difficult to find at US vendors. This makes it popular among European competition shooters. Many competitive shooters choose RWS top-tier ammo. RWS currently offers nine Premium Line.22 LR variants and three Professional Line offerings. The SSUSA tester observed that RWS Rifle Match ammo shot well in his Bergara BMR. It shot one-ragged-hole groups at 50 yard and about one MOA at 100 yard. This is a great performance for $10/box ammo.Norma.22 LR ammunition

Norma recently introduced XTREME LR-22 competition rimfire ammunition with a revolutionary bullet. This patented bullet design features a unique base with a cone (see diagram). Norma claims this “rocket tail” design reduces drag and creates less negative pressure at its back end. It will be interesting for the competition to see how this new bullet design performs in rimfire ELR.Wolf.22LR Ammunition

SSUSA claims that Wolf Match Target is a top-performer in the sub-$10 per box category. According to SSUSA, “It is manufactured in England by ELEY (and loaded with Vihtavuori Powder) and rebranded, if the online information is correct.” Target Sports USA sells Wolf Match Target for $84.99 per 1000 ($0.17 per round). Aquila.22LR Ammunition

Made in Mexico, Aquila.22 LR rimfire ammunition is the bargain item of the seven ammo-makers that SSUSA has to offer. Aquila is not suitable for a benchrest or three position match. However, it could be used for a local NRL-22 match at relatively short range or a steel target competition. Aquila.22 LR ammunition starts below $3.50 per package.
