Ruger’s Max-9 optic-ready pistol was released just a few years ago to much fanfare (below). It quickly became a major player in concealed carry due to its small size and low price. The pistol’s price has dropped to $10, and you can also get it with a factory-installed Ruger readyDot for $10 less than its original MSRP.
Ruger now offers Max-9 with factory installed Ruger ReadyDot micro reflex optics
The Shield RMSc footprint is used to co-witness the reflex optic with the Max-9’s tritium fiber-optic front view. The ReadyDot features a 15 MOA dot and is optimized for target acquisition.
The ReadyDot uses the light-gathering capabilities of fiber optics to create the aiming dot. It doesn’t require a battery and can adjust for brightness automatically. The ReadyDot is also factory installed and has fixed windage and elevation. This eliminates the need for delicate adjustment mechanisms. According to the company, this makes the optic one the most rugged, practical, waterproof, shock-resistant, and durable pistol optics on the market.
The Max-9’s price is now $439.00, down from $499.00. The Max-9 with the factory-installed ReadyDot costs $489.00, which is even lower than the original MSRP. The optic is only $99.95, however. It cannot be adjusted for windage or elevation. It is not adjustable for windage or elevation.
Mike Detty reported on March 15, 2021:
The 2018 SIG P365 was a shocker for the shooting community. It is a small gun with a large magazine capacity. Micro Compacts were born from the popularity of the 9mm. The Hellcat was introduced by Springfield Armory a year later. It is billed as the most powerful micro compact available and has an extended magazine that holds 13 rounds. Ruger’s latest gun has joined the “micro compact” club, and it’s a fine gun: the Ruger MAX-9.
First Look at the Ruger Max-9 Pistol
The Ruger MAX-9 is a small gun with a large magazine capacity, great trigger, a visible front sight, and the ability to mount micro-red dots.
The MAX-9’s lightweight weight is due to its textured polymer frame. It weighs only 18.4 ounces when unloaded. It measures just 6 inches in length, is 4.5 inches high and 1 inch wide. Ruger ships the gun with a 10-round flush fit magazine and an extended 12-round mag. Concealed carry users will find the ammunition to be quite comforting at thirteen rounds.
The front sight, which is standard on the MAX-9, allows the shooter visibility in all lighting conditions. It has a green fiber optic rod that makes the sight glow in daylight. A piece of tritium is hidden behind the fiber optic, which will make the sight glow in low-light hours.

Optic Options
More shooters are exploring the possibility of carrying an optic on a concealed gun. The MAX-9 has an optics plate that is compatible with the J-Point or Shield pattern dot sights. I drove to Riton Optic’s Tucson office (ritonoptics.com), and borrowed one of its excellent X3 TactixMPRD (Micro Pistol Red Dot). It was easy to mount on the Ruger, and it didn’t require an adapter plate. The X3 TactixMPRD features a 3.5 MOA dot and 10 brightness levels. It is powered by a common CR2032 lithium battery. Riton claims that one of these inexpensive and readily available batteries can last up to 50,000 hours! The red dot is only 6/10ths of an inch in weight, made from premium Japanese glass and comes with a lifetime warranty!
Rounds Downrange
I took the MAX-9 and X3 Tactix with me to Sonoita in Arizona. There is a piece BLM land that I love to shoot on. My biggest concern on a windy day with 25 MPH gusts was my target rocking in its target stand. The little Ruger performed admirably despite this. As you can see, I used three different range-style loads and three different defense loads. Two of these were +P loads. Everything was fed, cycled and fired perfectly. The MAX-9 can be used with +P ammunition, but the manual states that it is not recommended to use these hot rounds.
Ruger is known for making quality guns that last a lifetime. Ruger guns are affordable, and they offer great customer service. The MAX-9 is no exception and retails for $499. The MAX-9 is a micro-compact that can use a red dot sight. It should be considered by anyone looking for a compact. You can see my entire test in the video below.
