July 16th, 2022 Saturday at the Movies: Five Classic Metal Frame 9mm PistolsThis week, we are focusing on five classic metal-framed pistols in 9mm. These five handguns shoot the 9mm Luger (9x19mm). Many have been used by the military and police forces, as well as civilians for shooting and defense. The Editor has owned three of each of the five types of pistols and has shot them all. All of them are highly recommended. Metal-framed pistols have a lower center-of-gravity and are heavier than Glocks or other polymer-framed handguns. They are therefore less likely to flip the muzzle and have less perceived recoil than other polymer-framed handguns. It is very comfortable to hold and has a great ergonomic grip. The standard P226s don’t have a manual safety. However, the P226 has an automatic decocking lever that drops the hammer. This Editor has taught new shooters how to use a Sig P226 or Glock 17. The superior grip design of the Sig P226 made it easier for 80% of my trainees to see better. This resulted in a better sight picture and trainees were able to achieve better results with the P226 than the Glock 17. The P226 is a reliable firearm. My P226 has lasted me over 6000 rounds without a single jam. That’s impressive. The first video, which reviews the SIG P226, has more than 1.4 million YouTube views. This shows that it is very popular among pistoleros. HK P7 Series (PSP. P7m8. P7m13.) This Editor has extensively shot a P7m8. It is extremely accurate. It has a lower bore axis than 9mm pistols and therefore has less muzzle flip. The slide can be cycled straight back with the fixed barrel. From 1978 to 2008, the HK P7 semi-automatic pistol with blowback operation was developed and manufactured by Heckler & Koch (H&K). It is extremely thin and precise, with a trigger that rivals the Glock. The P7m8 has a unique gas delayed blowback system. This uses gas from the cartridge in order to slow down the slide’s rearward motion. This works by using a barrel port and a piston within a cylinder underneath the barrel. The “squeeze cocker”, which is located on the grip’s front, is the signature feature of P7 series. The firing pin is cocked by pressing down on the cocking lever. The weapon is fully de-cocked when the grip is released. It is safe with a round in it. Browning Hi-PowerThe Browning Hi-Power handgun is a single-action semi-automatic gun with a rich heritage. This handsome all-metal pistol was designed by American John Moses Browning and finished by Dieudonn. Saive at Fabrique Nationale, (FN), Herstal, Belgium. J.M. J.M. FN Herstal originally called the design “High Power”, referring to the 13-round magazine capacity that was almost double that of other designs like the Luger or Colt M1911. Later, the name was changed to “Hi-Power”. The Browning Hi-Power served as a weapon of choice for police and military personnel in many countries around the globe. It is a well-balanced pistol with a crisp trigger. After 82 years of continuous production, FN Herstal announced the hi-power would be discontinued in 2018. However, FN Herstal resumed Hi-Power production in 2022, so this classic is still available. CZ 75The CZ75 is the flagship pistol for CZ-USA. It has been a favorite among 9x19mm enthusiasts for more than 45 years. The CZ 75 was introduced in 1975. It is still viable as a defensive gun. CZ claims that the CZ 75 is used by more governments, militaries and police than any other pistol in this world. The CZ 75 is reliable and can be used for defense and IDPA competitions. The controls and ergonomics are excellent, the trigger is easy to use, and the controls are very intuitive. CZ has produced many variations of the CZ 75 pistol over the years, but the original CZ 75 is still a great handgun. Beretta 92FS and Military M9For Americans the Beretta92 series pistols are best known for being the official sidearm of their military for over 30 years. In 1985, the United States military replaced its.45 ACP M1911A1 gun with the Beretta92FS, also known as the “M9?”. The M9 and civilian models 92/92FS share a distinctive feature: the cut-away slide that exposes most 9mm barrels. The attractive grip design of the metal frame is also a plus. We were pleased with the accuracy and reliability of the 92FS pistols that we shot. Over the years, there have been many modifications and upgrades. The M9 was replaced by the polymer-framed SIG Sauer P320 in 2017. It was adopted as the military’s M17/M18 modular pistols.
