June 4, 2022 Saturday at the Movies: Great Tech advice from Keith GlasscockKeith Glasscock, one of America’s most respected and accomplished F-Class shooters, is also a highly respected coach. Keith Glasscock, a High Master, finished second at the 2021 NRA F-Class Long Range Championship F-Open division. He was also second at the 2020 Nationals. He finished tied with Pat Scully, F-Open winner, on points but with fewer numbers. He was also second at the 2019 Nationals. His consistency is unrivaled. This means that he knows the secrets to long-range wind calling and loading extremely accurate ammo. Keith has a popular YouTube Channel, with new content every week. Keith’s Winning in the Wind channel features 60+ videos that cover a variety of topics, including wind reading, reloading and component selection. Today’s Video Showcase features four of our favorite Keith Glasscock videos. Each video contains important points that will benefit all competitive rifle shooters, no matter if you shoot in 100-yard fun matches, compete at the National Level in F Class, LR Benchrest or Palma or High Power. Keith Glasscock explains how to prepare to shoot in a major medium- and long-range rifle competition. This video focuses on F-Class. Keith will explain how to prepare for the weather and “get the map” before the match. You can still look and learn even on the day of the match. One viewer commented, “I’ve seen some guys using their phones during matches. This is a good time to be in tune with wind patterns and fine-tune your wind strategy. Keith’s most viewed video is “How to Find (and Fine Tune) Seating Depth” Keith is an expert in finding the ideal seating depth for each barrel to maximize accuracy. For three shots, he is able to achieve groups in the high Ones. This would be great for a benchrest cartridge. However, Keith is doing it with a.284 Winchester that has more recoil. You should watch this video if you shoot FTR, F-Open, or PRS. This is Keith’s first video of a series that focuses on how to lower your ES/SD, reduce vertical at long range, and improve precision and accuracy through reducing velocity extreme spread (ES) or standard deviation (SD). Multiple processes are required to achieve the lowest ES, including precision powder weighing and careful seating. Brass annealing and primer selection are also necessary. Bullet selection is another factor. Bullet diameter and shape may vary between bullets with the same nominal caliber or weight class. You may be able to get higher accuracy and lower ES by using a different bullet brand. We found that bullet diameters of the same caliber can vary by as much as.0008? (eight ten-thousandths). Some barrels prefer the heavier bullets while others may prefer the thinner bullets. This will be the base to ogive measurement of your round. Beyond this point, you are “in to the lands”. You are “jumping” your bullets if you load less than the base-to-ogive length. Some combos of bullet and cartridge shoot well in the lands. However, you can also use other bullets or cartridges to jump. It is a good idea to jump your bullets with certain disciplines, as you might have to unload a chambered cartridge while on the firing line. Keith shows you how to determine “length from lands” with repeatable precision. Keith also reviews the SEB MiniX Coaxial Front Rest. Although gear reviews are not Keith’s primary focus, Keith does talk about products that he uses and likes. This video. Keith reviews the SEB Mini-X coaxial tripod rest, which is the latest from SEB Rests. The Mini-X allows for fast, precise elevation and windage adjustments with the joystick controller. It is easier to pack and move than a heavy front rest like a SEB NEO, Farley, or Farley. The Mini-X has new foot controls that make it easier for the rest to be levelled on uneven ground. See our SEB MiniX Report for more information.
