The St. Thomas Ground Hog Shoot in Pennsylvania is a popular match in Northeast. Varmint fun shoots, also known as “groundhog matchs”, are becoming increasingly popular in clubs across the United States. These matches are usually shot from a bench and involve paper targets, steel “critter silhouettes”, clay pigeons or a combination of both. These matches are popular because they allow you to shoot a variety of rifles and you don’t need to spend a lot to compete. They also provide fun for the entire family. The rules are inclusive – you won’t get turned away for having a rifle that is two ounces over weight. Shooters receive a large portion of match fees in cash prizes. The St. Thomas Sportsmen’s Association is located at the foot of a mountain, in south-central Pennsylvania. On a cool, Saturday morning, you’ll find the best shooters in the area at the monthly Groundhog Match. The match draws shooters from Virginia and Maryland as well as West Virginia and Pennsylvania. It may not be one of the longest yardage matches in the area, it can still be one of the most difficult. The range is a little sloped up the mountain so the wind can be tricky. The three wind flags located at 200,300,and 400 yards are often blowing in different directions.
