Saturday at the movies: Turret reloading presses in review

Saturday, May 27, 2023: Turret Reloading presses in ReviewEvery handloader will benefit from a Turret Press. This type of press has an upper rotating disc with multiple threaded places for dies or tools (such a powder dispenser). The market is flooded with turret press models, from the Area 419 9 Station Zero Press to the affordable Lee turret press. The RCBS 6-station turret is featured in today’s Saturday video. Also included are the Redding T-7 7-station press and the Lyman All-American 8-station turret. We begin with a feature of the advanced Area ZERO turret. This press was designed as the most precise turret to ever be created. As tested by Gavin Gear of UltimateReloader.com, the ZERO turret press delivered very impressive shoulder-bump consistency and ultra-low seated bullet run-out (about +/- 0.0005?). The numbers were the best you can expect from a single-stage quality press. Area 419 has done some impressive engineering. This is to be expected, as it’s a large investment – MSRP is $1275.00. SEE FULL REVIEW on UltimateReloader.com.The ZERO turret press lets you install up to nine (9) different reloading dies in the large top turret, which revolves around a central axis. The ZERO, unlike most turret press models, does not flex or wobble while you load. This is due to the clever locking system Area 419 has included for the turret after you have selected the die in your array. Area 419 uses a unique shell-holder locking system (see video at 12:20). This also adds to the precision. After watching the two videos in vertical format, here is a comparison between the Redding T-7 turret and Lyman 8 station turret:[embedded] [embedded] Lyman Brass Smith All American 8-Station PressThe Lyman Brass Smith All American 8-station press was introduced five years ago. In 2018, Lyman released a new 8 station turret presses, the All American 8 The All-American 8 is a favorite among handloaders. The 8-station Lyman, with a street price of $253.49, is $122 less expensive than the Redding T-7 7-station at $375.95. There’s no doubt that this is a significant advantage and we believe Lyman has taken sales from Redding. Our friend Gavin Gear, of UltimateReloader.com, created an informative video demonstrating press set-up. Gavin was eager to get started with this new, beefy turret-style press. “Why was the Lyman press so highly anticipated? Some of the reasons include: 8-station capacity; cast iron construction; on-press priming systems; ambidextrous designs and turret back support for repeatable bullet sizing and seating. More Stations Offer More Reloading OptionsGavin liked the 8 stations because it offers more flexibility. Eight stations allow you to have four sets of two dies, or three sets of two dies plus a decapping tool and a powder measuring device. Gavin says: “I have owned many reloading press variants including 3-stations, 4-stations, 5-stations, and 7-stations, but never an 8-station one until the Brass Smith All-American 8 arrived at the shop. I’ll say… you can never have too many stations on a manually indexed turret. I love that you can load multiple calibers/chamberings with the same turret setup. “Redding T-7 with Creedmoor Sports Turret Head. The Redding T-7 is a leading turret presses for precision handloaders. It has one more station than RCBS’s other “green” turret presses. It has a reliable priming system that is optional and plenty of leverage. Creedmoor Sports recently released an upgraded Enhanced press head for the Redding T-7. This $179.95 turret head allows for greater precision when it comes to case sizing and seating bullets. This video from UltimateReloader explains the benefits of the new precision head. These two enhanced heads, both priced at $179.95 each, are featured in the following video: Redding T-7 that has loaded more than 1,000,000 rounds. Redding displayed an old Redding T-7 Turret press that Sierra Bullets had received decades ago at the NRA Convention held in Dallas, 2018. This “old warrior”, one of the first T-7s manufactured by Redding was used to load more than 1,000,000 rounds of ammo in Sierra Bullets’ ballistics laboratory. Redding tested the press after all of that loading and, surprisingly, found that it remained “within specification”. Redding states: “This press has been subjected to real-world reloading stress and wear, yet it remains within ‘new spec’ after this historic test”. It may not have the most advanced features or stations, but it has been very reliable for many years. It is primarily used with pistol seating and sizing dies. I can load different cartridge types with six stations: 9x19mm.357 magnum, and.45 acp. READ FULL REVIEW on UltimateReloader.com.
