It’s great fun to make a hit on a critter and send it spinning in the air. You can also use varminting as an excuse to buy more rifles. Varminting allows you to shoot shorter distances with lower-recoiling calibers. For California ground squirrels, a.17 HMR is best within 125 yards. Then, switch to a 20 Practical (20-223 Rem). For prairie dogs, the 20 Practical is best, along with a nice.22 Br for 250-400 yards and a nice.243 Ackley for long shots.

This video shows two rimfires as well as a nice.243 win centerfire. First, a Ruger77/22 in Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR). This cartridge packs a lot more punch that a standard.22 LR cartridge. Next is the Savage A17 Thumbhole, a.17 HMR rifle. This semi-auto rifle has great ergonomics, excellent feed reliability, and very accurate at 100 yards (check that 3-shot target at 100 yard). The video also features the Howa 1500 Ranchland rifle with Hogue stock, which is in this case chambered to the.243 Winchester. We believe that every varmint hunter needs a.17 Cal rimfire gun. The.17 WSM and.17 HMR are very effective at small varmints up to 200 yards. It’s nice that you can shoot inexpensive ammo right out of the box without having to hunt for powders and primers. This Gunwerks video shows varmint hunting in Western USA. Aaron Davidson and Gunwerks crew test out new rifles with some rockchucks in this video. Although most of the rifles were not used, the host stated that the rockchucks took cover immediately after the first shot. This required coordination between spotters and shooters. At 2:44, a 6XC varminter appears. There’s also some drone footage that starts at 2:00. .22-250 Nails Ground Squirrels and Rock Hiraxes in South Africa
Here’s a South African video. The video maker begins with shots of ground squirrels. His.22-250 blows them into pieces. He switches to distant targets, a furry groundhog-sized animal called the Rock Hyrax or Cape Hyrax, and he then shoots them into pieces. Mature Rock Hyraxes are 4-5 kg in weight and have a short tail and ears. These Rock Hyraxes can be found at higher elevations in rock crevices which allows them to escape predators (but not skilled Varmint Hunters).
