Saturday Movies: .22 LR Rimfire Ammunition Comparison Testing

Today’s Saturday Movie showcase features five videos that test rimfire.22 LR ammunition. The videos cover a wide range of ammunition, from cheap.22 LR ammo to high-end.22 LR Match ammo. John Whidden, the long-range champion, shows off the Whidden Gunworks testing range developed in conjunction with ELEY Ammunition. In recent years, the long range capabilities of.22 LR rimfire ammunition have been pushed beyond their limits. These matches feature targets at 100 yards, 200 yards, and 300 yard distances. In 2023, Lapua announced the release of two new.22 LR rimfire ammunition types: Long Range and Super Long Range. Both are designed to optimize the performance of.22LR beyond 100 yards. SSUSA October 2018 Issue For each ammo type, SSUSA lists the bullet weight, velocity (FPS), and average of two, 5-shot groups at fifty yards. Lapua Center X LRN was the most accurate ammo, with an average group size of 0.37” at 50 yards. Lapua X-ACT was second best at 0.42″. Ammo was fired from a Cooper Model 57 M rifle equipped with a 3-9x33mm Leupold VX-2 Scope. The ammo was grouped into three categories, including Varmints/Small Game, Target and Plinking.
