Saturday Movies: 7mm Hunting Rifle Cartridges

We are nearing the end of another hunting season. If you’re pursuing large game such as Elk, you need a powerful and accurate cartridge. We like 7mm for hunting big game because there are so many options, from the 7mm 08 up to the very large magnums. Hornady’s 7 PRC is a new favorite among hunters. Today’s Saturday Movie Showcase features seven videos that cover a wide range of 7mm cartridges, including: 7mm-08 REM, 7×57 Mauser 7mm PRC 7mm WSM 7mm SAUM, 7mm Rem Mag and 28 Nosler.
7mm PRC in Custom Rifle

The 7mm PRC is part of Hornady’s PRC series, which also includes the 6.5 PRC & 300 PRC. The 7mm PRC has a modern non-belted magnum design that offers excellent power and good ballistics. The 7mm PRC is able to drive high-BC bullets of 175 grains at 3000 FPS. This makes it very effective for putting down large animals. This Precision Rifle Network Video features a high-end 7mm PRC custom rifle built with a Terminus Zeus Action, 29” barrel and Grayboe Stock. Triggertech triggers are also used. Athlon Scope is also featured. This 7mm PRC rifle shows impressive accuracy.
7mm Remington Magnum vs. 7mm PRC

Gavin Gear, from UltimateReloader, tests the classic 7mm Remington Magnum belt vs. a relatively new 7mm PRC in this video. The testing is done using two hunting rifles fired from a bipod. Gavin notes both cartridges are very accurate and have impressive energy down range. He concludes, however, that the 7mm PRC without belt has some advantages.

7mm Remington Magnum SAKO S20

This video shows real-world testing of a SAKO hunting rig chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum. The SAKO S20 comes in a variety of stock types. The thumbhole Hunter version is shown here with a slim foreend. The testers note that the 7mm Rem mag factory ammo is very accurate, making it a good cartridge for large game.
Most Popular 7mm Cartridges

This Ron Spomer video from Outdoors covers the most popular 7mm ammunition. The video discusses the history of 7mm cartridges, ballistics and hunting recommendations. The ballistics of the Hornady ELD-X 175gr (Extremely low Drag eXpanding), in three different chamberings, is detailed at the 6:45 mark.
7mm SAUM vs. 7mm WSM

This 17-minute video compares the two modern 7mm Short Magnum cartridges – the 7mm SAUM and the Winchester Short Magnum. Both cartridges have been adapted over the years for F-Class Open Division. In this video, factory ammunition for both cartridge types were tested with a modern chassis gun shot pronely with a bipod.
7mm-08 Remington

The 7mm-08 Rem cartridge is derived from a.308 Winchester cartridge that has been necked down to a 7mm. In 1980, Remington Arms popularized this cartridge by renaming it and offering it in chamberings for its Model 788 and Model 700 Rifles. The 7mm-08 cartridge is the second most common cartridge derived from the original 308 Win.
The 7mm-08 and.308 win are virtually identical in terms of dimensions, except for the neck diameter. When comparing heavy bullets grain for grain, 7mm-08 has better ballistics. A 168-grain bullet fired from the 7mm-08 will have less windage and less drop than a similar bullet fired from the.308 Win. The 7mm-08 has many of the same advantages as the.308 (inherent precision, long barrel life, excellent terminal performance), but offers better ballistics grain-for grain. The 7mm-08 is a popular deer hunting round because of its qualities.
7mm Multi-Cartridge Comparison

You want to buy a 7mm gun, but you haven’t decided on a cartridge. This 30-minute Ron Spomer video examines a variety of 7mm cartridges. The 7mm-08, the 7mm Rem Magnum and the 28 Nosler are all compared (see time 19:40). Ron explains the best way to zero a 7mm cartridge and how hunters can assess Maximum Point Blank Range.
