SDS Imports has been carrying some Saiga-based AK shotgun clones since a while. The new VP12 features a magwell that feeds from VEPR pattern magazines and feeds from VEPR-pattern magazines. We’ve seen imported AK shotguns before but most are patterned after the Russian Saiga-12. The Saiga was the more popular and cheaper of the two options back when Russian-made shotguns could be imported. However, VEPRs were generally considered to be the better option. There were many reasons why this was so, from build quality to extra features, but the most significant difference between the two guns is the magazine they used. The Saigas used traditional AK-style rock and lock mags, while the VEPR had a magwell that could be used to insert magazines like an AR. The VEPR-12 was the preferred choice for competitors who opted for an AK platform shotgun. However, these guns have been banned from being imported into the United States since 2017. In the meantime, the only clones that are available are the Saiga-pattern. SDS Imports recently released the VP12. This budget shotgun uses VEPR magazines and is the answer to the demand for a 12-gauge AK shotgun. After the ban on Russian imports, OEM mags have been quite expensive. However, aftermarket mags made by companies like SGM are more affordable and come in 25-round drums. This change from Saiga-pattern will allow for faster and smoother reloads. The VP12 has a last round hold-open feature, just like the VEPR-12. The VEPR-12 also has a railed dust cover to mount optics, a three inch chamber, and an M22x0.75RH threaded barrel. But that’s not all the similarities. The VP12’s left-side charging handle allows right-handers, who can charge the weapon without removing the firing grip, is the biggest departure. This will make the VP12 more attractive to competitive shooters. The VP12 has a 4-position, manually adjustable gas regulator that is different from the VEPR-12’s self-regulating system. If you do get one, make sure you dial it in for the ammo you are using. Each VP12 comes with a 5-round mag and an MSRP of $489.95. They are also available now.
