Close (Photo by WikiMedia commons) We all know the expression “our home” and that castles were built to protect what is inside. Most likely, it’s our families and the possessions that we have worked hard to acquire. Not everyone sees the world the same way. They see it as easier to take our possessions than to work for them. Even if you don’t own the home, installing security systems for rental properties can help ensure its safety. RELATED STORY Security Systems for Rental Homes: The 7 Most Protective Dog Breeds. It is important to take precautions to protect your home, no matter where you live. Whether you rent or own your property, the measures you take will depend on what kind of property you have. Renters will have more restrictions than homeowners, and they will be restricted in the type of permanent modifications that they can make to their rental property. You may not be able to rent an apartment. The building’s outside space, doors, and hallways are not included. We’ll be looking at non-invasive resources you can access as a renter. Let’s first look at the history of burglaries. The Truth About Burglary. Let me begin by saying that I have been working in law enforcement for over 25 years. I was a detective for a county agency for over a decade and probably dealt with hundreds of burglaries during that time. Although I don’t claim to be an expert, I can share some of my experiences. Many people feel confident that they can handle a burglar with their trusted 12 gauge or tricked-out M4 and their pack of Rottweilers. While it’s great to be home during a burglary, the reality is that most people aren’t. Burglars are well aware that America is armed and have a good chance of meeting an armed homeowner. They will often target homes when no one is home, such as in the middle of the day, while you’re at work or your children are at school. Businesses are the exact opposite. They will attack businesses after hours, so they don’t get plugged with a clerk with an.38. True home invasions are rare and often involve drug dealers or debt. Sometimes, it’s just deplorable people who prey upon elderly people in the hope that they will resist. Your battle buddy attack dog, NVGs, body armor and body armor may not be as effective as you thought. What now? Let’s look at some things you can do to make your home more secure and less vulnerable. I don’t mean to say you shouldn’t have a home defence plan or be armed before I do that. There are always exceptions to this general rule. It pays to be prepared. Do it yourself deterrents are a good place to start. They may not offer any security or defense but they can be enough to scare off potential intruders. They are also typically less expensive, which is good news for those with tight budgets. First Alert Motion Sensing Lamp Socket This is a very simple and inexpensive setup. Simply screw it into an existing socket and attach the bulb of choice. The product lights up the room only when it detects movement. However, it may give pause to anyone who comes through the window. First Alert has a list of places to buy the product, and the cost is usually between $20-$25. Visit FirstAlert.com for more information. Sabre Door Handle Alarm Another inexpensive security product that is easy to use is the Sabre Door Handle Alarm. Simply place it on your doorknob to activate the alarm. It will sound a 110dB siren up to 600 feet from the door if it opens. It will wake up any potential burglars and alert anyone else in the vicinity. These are ideal for travel, but they would also work well in smaller apartments or areas with restricted access. They are only $11.99 each. SabreRed.com has more information. GE Door & Window Sensor (4-Pack). Another easy setup is the GE Door & Window sensor kits. There are many options, but the basic apartment kit includes three window/door sensors as well as a deluxe sensor with control pad. They are battery-operated, and come with all necessary mounting hardware. It’s easy to install and wire-free. You can set the 4-digit code to control the alarm. There are three settings: off, chime and a 120-decibel one. The alarm will be set when a door or window is opened with one of the sensors attached. These sensors are available online and at your local hardware store. The cost for the 4-pack is $30. Lowes.com has more information. Honeywell C1 Wireless Smart Indoor Security Cam. A single C1 costs around $100. They can be purchased at your local brick-and-mortar stores or online. HoneywellHome.com has more information. Monitored security systems The most expensive category. It ensures that someone is always monitoring your alarms and can dispatch police directly if necessary. These systems are convenient because someone is watching them even if they’re not your home. These systems may also include CO2 and smoke detectors, which will provide additional protection beyond just preventing break-ins. These systems are more complicated to install, but there are still options that can be installed by renters themselves. You’ll find the same names popping up in searches for security companies, especially those geared towards renters. People are talking about Wyze, Cove, SimpliSafe and Frontpoint. There are many other options, but these are the best places to start. Depending on the company and the number and type of cameras and sensors you choose, the initial equipment cost can range from $100 to $400. Depending on the coverage and company, monthly ministering fees can range from $15 to $60 per mois. Some companies offer a month-to-30 plan that you can cancel at any moment. Others require you to sign up for yearly plans. You might consider matching a plan with your rental lease to ensure you don’t pay for coverage you don’t use. These systems don’t need to be installed permanently so you can pack them and take them with your when you move. You can move them to any new place, whether it’s a new apartment or a house you buy. This is consistent with my experience. These crimes are often committed when no one is looking. If the burglar is smart, they will take items that can’t be traced easily and make a quick profit. Cameras are a great tool in solving crime. I expect we will see an increase in solve rates as more people invest in security systems for their homes, even rental properties.
