Shield SMSc: Small and Mighty Micro Red Dot

What makes the SMSc ideal for compact defensive pistols?Weighs less that a half-ounce. Mounts lower on the slide. Compatible with most compact pistol sights. Battery life is three to four year. There are likely articles, videos, or conversations at your local firearms shop about the Springfield Hellcat. The SMSc is ideal for compact defensive pistols. It comes with an 11-round and an extended 13-round magazines. It also comes with a Tritium front sight as well as a tactical Rack U-Notch back sight. The suggested retail price varies depending on the variation. I have spent more than 500 rounds with this pistol over the past two months. It’s a very compact 9mm pistol that is extremely comfortable to shoot and accurate enough to solve any problem you might have with a defensive handgun. It has also proven to be reliable. The pistol can also be ordered in an optics-ready model, which means that the rear slide can be precut to accept a micro reflex scope. This is one of the pistol’s best features. A friend of mine was looking to buy a small defensive handgun. After some discussion and range time with it, he decided to purchase it. The Hellcat is a great gun, but it was while I was working with it that I discovered something even better: the Shield SMSc micro red dot 4 MOA sight.SMSc AdvantageThis sight can be purchased from Springfield for $299. It is extremely small and weighs less that a half-ounce when the battery is installed. The Sheild SMSc is smaller than other mini-reflex sights and weighs less than a half-ounce with the battery installed. This allows the sight mount to be placed very low, so that the sights can still be seen through the sight window. This is a great idea. You can still engage targets even if the battery dies or the electronics stop working. The sight’s battery life is between three and four year. This is a huge improvement on the time when red-dot sights first appeared on competition handguns. Although some people thought red-dot and reflex sights would one day be common on defensive handguns (which they were), I doubt they ever imagined that they would be this compact. You can carry the Hellcat comfortably with an IWB holster such as the Crucial Concealment Covert IWB (just $59.99) and the Sheild SMSc installed. They are also becoming lighter and more reliable. I wrote a chapter on red-dot-style sights in my 2013 book Handgun Training for Personal Protection. Their primary advantage was that you can engage targets with a target/threat focused. This means that you don’t have to shift your focus away from the threat. You simply place the dot on your target and pull the trigger just like you would with a red-dot sight for a carbine. It is the most intuitive sight system. Shooters can reduce engagement times by as much 10% if they haven’t had to practice as much as conventional sights. This is a great advantage. This allows your peripheral vision to keep track of what is going on around you. You must still have the pistol and the sight in front of you to accurately shoot a reflex scope. Reflex sight systems have the disadvantage of being an electrical system that could fail. The Shield SMSc on the Hellcat is a good option because it allows you to see your pistol sights even if the Shield SMSc reflex scope is not working. The three together make a great IWB concealed carrying package. The sight window can be blocked by light from the rear or front. The lens can also be affected by dirt, blood, and other debris. But, as I wrote in my book, “The Future is Coming.” We will all shoot faster and better when it arrives. We will all shoot better and faster when it happens.
