Shooting Industry’s June Issue focuses on Gun Safety & Security

June 2nd 2023Shooting Industry’s June Issue Focuses On Gun Safety & SecurityShooting Industry has released its very first “Safety Issue”, coinciding with National Safety Month. The June issue includes three articles that can be of great benefit to gun owners and range operators. These articles cover Firearms Safes (large and small), Eye and Ear Protection, as well as general range Health & Safety procedures. The June issue contains articles on Firearms Safes, Eye and Ear Protection and General Range Health and Safety Procedures. Small safes (think of 1-20 rifles), large safes (20+) and extra-large, larger safes can hold up to 100 rifles. We rotate through them all pretty regularly, but I’d say the 60? size is a bit slower. We seem to rotate through all of them pretty consistently, but if I had to pick one that’s a bit slow, it would be the medium sizes such as 60? wide. McCunn: We’ve noticed in Iowa a trend towards larger safes. 72? For example, tall safes are very popular in our region. We use these as add-on sales for every gun sold in our store and offer a discount at the point of purchase. Hyatt: Portable gun safes are our biggest sellers. They are a cost-effective way for gun owners to store their firearms while allowing them to be easily accessed, both at home and on the road. Vaultek’s LifePod and Barikade travel safes do a fantastic job at addressing this. They are available in different sizes, colors, and features. Eye and Ear ProtectionEye protection and ear protection is essential for all gun owners. Visitors to shooting ranges can rent or borrow eye and ear protective gear if they do not have their own. Store owners interviewed by Shooting Industry said that safety gear is a popular item. John Stephenson, the general manager of Metro Shooting Supplies, Missouri, says that this gear is a must-have for every shooter. Metro Shooting encourages all customers to wear eye and ear protection. Electronic muffs are becoming more popular. These provide excellent protection from high decibel sounds, while still allowing shooters the ability to hear range commands. Plugs can be effective on their own, but electronic muffs are a better option. Plugs under muffs provide maximum sound protection (6-8 dB better than typical muffs), while allowing the shooter to hear instructions and to communicate with other shooters. The article covers a number of key points, including:1. Check the range frequently for safety hazards.2. Tests for lead dust and noise are conducted on range workers.

3. Range managers and employees should receive safety and health training.

4. Safety and health protocols should be communicated to contractors who work at the range.

5. Verify that the safety and Health programs are functioning as intended.
