SonDay GunDay: Father Trains Son With Single-Shot.22LR Rifle
Today’s story is a heartwarming tale about father and son and how marksmanship training can help to strengthen that bond — father teaching son. Kelly Bachand and his son Charles, a young shooter, are featured in this story. They shot at the Skyline Range in Alabama. Kelly has been a long-time friend of ours. We first met him as a young Palma (Fullbore), shooter. He was a college student and was able to compete with some of the best sling shooters in America. Kelly became a shooting celebrity later as the youngest contestant ever on the History Channel’s Top Shot TV Show.
Kelly said, “I didn’t bring a shooting pad to Alabama so when we decided that we would try prone, he had to lie on the ground and use the soft rifle case underneath his elbows. He loved it!
Kelly mentions that Charles loved shooting prone and enjoyed shooting at our new swinging target (see video below). Charles is a bright, intelligent, and joyful little boy. I love teaching him.

Keystone Arms Crickett Precision Rifle — Great First Rimfire under $300.00
The small single-shot Crickett Precision Rifle Kelly was very affordable. While the base model rig costs $349, you can get it for as low as $270 from some vendors. You can also get the complete package including scope and bipod for between $310-$350. This makes training your children affordable.
The Keystone Sporting Arms Crickett Precision Rifle is a smaller version of the popular PRS designs. It has an adjustable comb and “Crickettinny Rail” Rail that accepts Picatinny or Weaver-style rings. There is also a lower rail mount at the fore-end to hold the bipod. This single-shot.22 LR rifle is a great choice for young boys and girls.
The Crickett Precision Rifle is available in a variety external colors/finishes. This includes the patriotic Stars and Stripes version (the “Amendment Package”). The CPR can be purchased as a base rifle, or as a package that includes a 4x28mm scope with bipod. Kelly purchased the base model and then added a Red Dot optic which he bought separately. Kelly explained that he bought the base model without a scope or bipod and then added a Red Dot optic on top. This is easy for a 4-year-old to understand, as it has infinite eye relief.
