November 9, 2022Bart Sauter wins Tack Driver III Match at South CarolinaBullet maker Bart Sauter is now the king of 300m, having won his second consecutive Tack Driver III multidisciplinary match in South Carolina. Bart won the Tack Driver Grand Agg for the second consecutive year after finishing sixth in group shooting and first in score shooting. Wayne Campbell, a short-range Benchrest ace, finished second overall. Wayne Campbell finished first in the Group-shooting phase, and was eighth in score shooting. Jeff Peinhardt was third overall. He was interestingly fifth in both Group and fifth in Score. That’s consistency. According to reports, 6mm PPCs won this year’s Tack Driver III match, which took place November 5-6, 2022. We believe that 6 to 7 of the top 10 finishers shot 6PPCs. The 6PPC has been the most popular chambering for 100/200 yard benchrest-for group competitions. For decades, the Tack Driver Showdown is an all-comers rifle match. This multi-discipline match with both SCORE targets and GROUP targets reveals which rifle types are the most accurate, at least up to 300 meters. The Tack Driver Showdown III match was held last weekend, November 5-6th, 2022 at Orangeburg’s Mid-Carolina Gun Club. Organizers invited all types of rifles (except railguns) for competition at 300 meters for score and group honors. Membership in an organization is not required. This year, there were 89 competitors. The Tack Driver firing line was unique in that you might see 6 PPC/LV/HV rifles, 30 BRS score rigs and 17-lb 600-yard or 1000-yard benchrest guns all together. A few F-Class rifles and PRS rifles may also be present, as well as an AR15 or two. In 2022, almost all competitors had benchrest-style rifles. Most were designed for the 100/200 yard score, and group games. It’s not surprising as BR rifles are low-profile and smooth-recoiling at 100, 200, 600 yards. Here’s the complete list of rifles that competed in this year’s competition based on cartridge type:6PPC — 33
30 BR — 20
6BRA — 11
BR — 6 (mostly 6-mm) 30 Dasher — 6.
6mm Dasher — 3
6GT — 3
6.5 Creedmoor — 2?.284 — 1 Type unknown
30×47 — 1
30WW — 1
BRW — 1 (caliber unknown) Tack Driver III targets were located at 300m (328 yards). It’s not “mid-range” according to benchrest standards but it is enough to give higher-BC bullets an advantage in windy and rapidly changing conditions. The 6PPCs that shot lighter-weight 6mm bullets won this year. A big old 10-60X Valdada Precision scope with 40mm tube was added to the mix. Vihtavuori N133 powder was also used. I also used my 68gr boattail bullets. It’s a system. It was a great system. I won it last year with a 6BRA, and this year with a 6PPC. Caliber-wise, there are many combinations and cartridges that can win. Jeff Godfrey (of Piedmont Mafia), brought his 6BRX (I think), and it shot like an laser. Jeff finished in second place at Day 1. Jeff was in second place at the end of Day 1. It’s easy — my goal was to make the benchrest World Team. My resources were directed towards barrels to support the 6PPC. I didn’t purchase a single barrel for long range this year. I used all of my long-range competitive gear for the Nationals at 600 and 1000 yards. I would have used both the 6BRA AND 6PPC for this match, but I didn’t have either. I would have chosen the 6BRA EVERY TIME and the 6PPC TWICE ON SUNY. Editor’s note: 2022 was a great year for Bart Sauter. He also won the 2022 NBRSA Short Range National Championship shooting his 6PPC, which is a no-turn-neck shot. Comment by Forum Members: “Congratulations Bart on your second Tack Driver victory! Bart is a great shooter. He is able to prepare for matches to the Nth degree and then adapt to any changes that may occur during matches. Few people have the same level of skill, knowledge, or dedication as him. All who were there deserve congratulations. All of you are winners… It was a great time for all the competitors, I’m sure.” Samuel Hall (Past IBS champion) “While the Tack Driver concept was designed to attract shooters of Short Range Group, Short Range Score and F Class, as well as all other disciplines that require precision rifle shooting, it is still a Benchrest match. It is run under Benchrest rules. A combination’s Agging ability takes precedence over downrange ballistics like a bullet’s ability of buck conditions. This includes the bullets, barrel, tune, and the bench equipment . Jackie Schmidt It’s a great way to show precision bench shooting with different disciplines coming together. Bravo to Mr. Cline, and all the other shooters. — Jeff PPCBasic Information about the Tack Driver Shoot
There are two types of semi-auto gas guns and bolt-action rifles. There are no design limitations other than a maximum weight of 22 pounds and a maximum caliber of.338. Jeff Stover, past president of IBS, tells us that “we envision the full range of the world’s most precise rifles on line: short and longer range benchrest rifles; F-Class, AR other tactical, egg-shoot guns, whatever …[.]” Semi-autos require chamber flags. Otherwise bolts must always be out.
