The USMC Ka-Bar is perhaps one of the most iconic knives in military history. Originally designed for the Marines in 1942, the Ka-Bar has been used by the Army Navy Coast Guard and Underwater Demolition Teams. John Stitt, the CEO of Ka-Bar, and Pineland Cutlery, Inc., had a vision for an updated version of “Ka-Bar”. He wanted improved edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance. The Spartan-Ka-Bar is the result. The fighter is made of CPM MagnaCut, and has the same iconic features as the original. MagnaCut, a stainless steel specifically developed by Crucible Industries for the cutlery market, is a stainless product. MagnaCut has all the corrosion resistance, hardness and toughness of stainless steel with an added level of toughness. Spartan’s deep cryogenic treatment, in combination with the Spartan-Ka-Bar, makes it ready for use in harsh environments. The Spartan-Ka-Bar has an overall length 12 inches and a 7-inch blade that features the Ka-Bar clip. The blade has a flat saber grinding and a swedge tip. This gives the knife a sharp edge and excellent penetration. The iconic fuller is located on the blade, just above the primary slant. This adds to the classic look of the “Ka Bar”. The handle is another difference between the Spartan-Ka-Bar vs. the original. The Spartan-Ka-Bar features the traditional hidden-tang design. It replaces the stacked-leather handle with Kraton G. But the deep parallel striations on the handle material keep the familiar look and feeling of the original. The handle is held in place by a 301 stainless steel cap. A stainless-steel guard keeps the hand from sliding onto the blade. Each Spartan Ka-Bar comes in your choice between PVD Tungsten (in flat black) and ZrN (in dark flat earth).
