January 1, 2023Sunday gunday 2023: Gavin’s 6GT Shines In Snowy Northwest. This is the very first day in 2023. We present a precision rifle with a relatively brand new cartridge, the 6GT. George Gardner of G.A. The 6GT was developed by George Gardner of G.A. It also has a longer case body to allow it to feed better from magazines. Even with the added capacity, the 6GT is still very efficient, and can achieve good velocities with less powder than a 6mm Creedmoor.Today’s Sunday Gunday feature rifle was smithed and tested by Gavin Gear of UltimateReloader.com. Gavin did all of the gunsmithing, including chambering and fitting the muzzle brake. He also laser engraved the barrel. Gavin used only the best components for this 6GT rifle: Krieger 28?, BAT TR action. 1:7.5-twist 6-mm barrel, TriggerTech Diamond Rem 700 compatible trigger, and Area 419 hellfire muzzle brake. The barreled action was then mounted in a rugged and handsome MDT ACC Chassis. The Zero Tech 4.5-27x50mm FFP Trace Advanced scope with 30mm Hawkins Precision high rings is mounted on top. The video below shows the rifle build and load development. It also features amazing shooting sequences on snowy hills in the Pacific Northwest. Gavin and his team used a drone to capture overhead footage. After developing a promising load using Berger 109gr LHT bullets, Varget Powder, and Alpha brass, Gavin set off for the hills to shoot from a bipod at longer ranges. His load had shot well below half-MOA at 100 meters in testing so he was hopeful he could hit multiple steel targets at 340 yards and 760 yards. He did indeed, proving both the rifle’s accuracy and Gavin’s fine trigger-pulling skills. 760 Yards — 19:00 time
Gavin’s 6GT Precision RifleGavin Gear did all of the gunsmithing for this project. He used his Precision Matthews TL-1660 lathe to chamber the rifle with an Alpha carbide 6GT reamer. The entire barrel work took approximately four hours. Below is the reamer used to cut the chamber. It was completed with a 0.170? Freebore and 0.270? Neck diameter. You might prefer a chamber with a larger 0.272 for other brands of brass. Neck diameter
Chambering the Krieger barrel using an Alpha carbide 6GT Reamer, 0.170″ bore, and.270? Neck diameter. This project went smoothly with Gavin being able to install the Krieger barrel in the MDT Chassis and fit it with the buttstock in about an hour. The total build time was approximately five hours. Laser engraving the 28 was a nice finishing touch to the project. The Krieger barrel can be seen in the video below. The 6GT — A 6 Dasher on Steroids
6GT Cartridge Design Features The 6GT is shorter than the 6mmBR and 6 Dasher but longer than the 6mm Creedmoor or 6.5×47 Lapua. The 6GT’s case body is long enough to feed reliably from a magazine. It also has sufficient capacity to run popular powders at acceptable pressures. It has a 35-degree shoulder angle. It has the low recoil and mag compatibility of a 6 Dasher. Competitors can run 6mm 105gr bullets at 3000+ FPS, or heavier bullets at 2950FPS with the 6GT. This 28? Gavin was able to achieve 3004 FPS using a Krieger barrel and 109gr Bergers. The 6GT’s qualities are listed on the Precision website as follows: Loading for the 6GTGavin began with high-quality Alpha Munitions brass. The cases were then annealed using an AMP Annealer, and trimmed to the desired length using a Henderson-powered trimmer (see video). After sizing the cases with a Forster Cox press, Federal SR Primers were seated using a Primal Rights competitor seater. Next, the powder was measured using an A&D FX120i force restore scale. Finally, the Berger 109gr LR hybrid Target bullets were seated using a Forster Micrometer Die, again using the smooth Forster Co–Ax press. Initial Load Testing with Hornady Projectiles and Berger The Krieger cut-rifled barrel proved to be very accurate and Hodgdon Varget powder was a good choice for the 6GT.
Gavin’s 6GT features a MDT-ACC short action chassis with SRSX Elite buttstock and vertical grip. The most promising were the Berger 109gr LRHT Bullets. Gavin settled on 34.6 grains Varget after testing a variety of charge weights. This resulted in a fine accuracy and a muzzle velocity of 3004 FPS. The chart shows the group size measurements for this load. Four three-shot groups at 100 yards averaged 0.361 MOA. The rifle produced a nice 0.38 MOA (0.455). five-shot group.——————————– Winter Wonderland for Shooters ——————————-Coming Soon — Ultimate Reloader Rifles Business Gavin Gear is in the process of opening his own gunsmithing business. He will offer a variety custom-built rifles for hunting, PRS/NRL and ELR as well as other competitive disciplines. Gavin explains that Ultimate Reloader is preparing to start custom rifle work for the public in Spring 2022. Most likely, we will start with complete custom rifle build using parts from our stock. We will be focusing on high-end bolt-action rifle builds as well as gunsmithing, including Remington 700 and clones. We will accept limited gunsmithing work, except for complete builds (i.e. We will accept limited gunsmithing work outside of complete builds (i.e. chambering, muzzle threading).
