Sunday GunDay April 23rd 2023: 22 Creedmoor – Versatile Varmint CartridgeThe 6mm Creedmoor became popular among hunters and PRS competitors. The 6mm Creedmoor was popular with hunters and PRS competitors. However, its little brother, the 6mm Creedmoor gained popularity because it had less recoil and better ballistics. It also cost less. There’s another Creedmoor relative, the 22 Creedmoor. This is a 6mm Creedmoor shortened to.224. The 22 Creedmoor is a high-velocity varmint cartridge that can be used in tactical and PRS competitions. With a modern cartridge design and high-quality brass, you get 22-250-class velocities.GunsAmerica Digest has a great article on the 22 Creedmoor. Jeff Cramblit, a reviewer, built a 22 Creedmoor and tested it using a variety bullet weights. He concluded that it was best used as a varminter but could also be used for PRS, provided the velocity is kept below the 3200 fps limit common to PRS matches. Copper Creek, Gunwerks and Spark Munitions are among the ammo makers that have produced 22 Creedmoor-loaded ammo. Copper Creek is the manufacturer of the most 22 Creedmoor ammo. They have 18 different bullet options ranging from 68 grain to 95 grain, including two lead free bullet types. Currently, however, the majority of items are “out-of-stock”. Copper Creek offers load development kits with either Peterson brass or Hornady. Here are five Cooper Creek options using Sierra and Berger Bullets: In addition, several companies have offered 22 Creedmoor Cartridge Brass: Alpha Munitions (Atlas ADG), Hornady Cartridge, and Peterson Cartridge. Peterson Brass is excellent. Of course, you can also get high-quality Lapua Creedmoor 6mm brass. Lapua brass is known for its outstanding durability and consistency. Choose between large primers or small primers. Necking down can be done in one step with a full-length or neck-sizing die. You’re only stepping down from.243 to.224 — not a big jump.22 Creedmoor Brass by Peterson Cartridge
According to Derek Peterson of Peterson Cartridges, “We built the tooling for our.22 Creedmoor Brass in response to an increase in long-distance varmint and predator hunting. Plus, the round is a lot of fun to shoot. It is a flat-shooting, low-recoil round that is wind-bucking and deadly accurate at up to 800 yards. Peterson said, “When we designed the tooling to produce the.22 Creedmoor, we set out with the goal of making casings that had improved features. “And we succeeded. We increased the hardness of the head to tolerate higher pressures. “We increased the internal volume to work better with slow-burning powders such as Reloder 26, or H1000.” Bullet Choices for the 22 Creedmoor
If you have a barrel with a twist rate that is appropriate, you can use heavy bullets of 85-95 grains in the 22 Creedmoor. We think the lighter 65-80 grain rounds are better for varminting. This produces high velocities which provide explosive impacts against small varmints.
What is the best role for the 22 Creedmoor bullet?
GunsAmerica’s Jeff Cramblit prefers the 22 Creedmoor for varmint rounds: “The performance and accuracy of the 22 Creedmoor is outstanding with 75-80 grain Bullets. I’ve heard claims of 80 grain Bergers hitting 3500 fps from 26? This would be devastating to any varmint. Loaded ammunition with bullets in 70-75 range is available, leaving 24″ barrels and velocities of around 3400+ fps. This is a bit more conservative compared to personal hand-loading but still makes it a flat shooting, low-recoiling round that delivers impressive results.” Jeff says that the 22 Creedmoor can also be used for PRS, but with heavier bullets. “I built the 22 CM as a dual-purpose or 3-purpose weapon. The first was to hunt coyotes and other varmints. The second was to shoot PRS (Precision Rifle Series), and the third, for hunting large game. “As with any multi-purpose device, there are compromises.” Source: The Amazing 22 Creedmoor – A Wildcat Worth a Close Look22 Creedmoor Cartridge Measurements (No SAAMI Spec yet)More Efficient Alternates — the 22 BR or 22 BRAIf your 6mmBR rifle is already in good condition and you’re looking for a faster cartridge to use for varmint hunting, you might want to consider necking down some brass. We’ve used the 22 BR for varmint shooting and a steel match. This cartridge is flat-shooting and offers excellent accuracy. If you plan to use the 22 BR for local matches, we recommend getting a barrel with a fast twist so that you can shoot longer bullets with high BC. The faster-twist barrels will still work well with the shorter 40gr – 66gr varmints. For more information about the 22 BR cartridge for varminting or target shooting, including recommended loads for bullets from 40gr – 90gr, please read our Accurate shooter 22 BR Cartridge Guide. The 22 BRA has a 40-degree shoulder that allows for a few extra grains to be loaded into the barrel. This will increase your FPS for all bullet classes. It’s easy to fire-form a 22 BR with good bullets. We fire-formed a varmint 22 BRA and it showed excellent precision — there’s really no need to waste bullets. Fire-form at a match.
