Kulzer Sets 8 IBS 1000-Yard IBS Benchrest Records With 6 BRA RiflesReport by Alex Wheeler
Glenn Kulzer, of Dillon, Montana, had a season in 2021 that will go down as one of the most memorable seasons in 1000-Yard Benchrest History. Glenn Kulzer of Dillon, Montana set eight IBS records at the Deep Creek range near Missoula in 2021. He was then named IBS 1K shooter of the year. This is not only because of the number but also the quality of the records. When a world record is set for a small group, it’s usually a singular event. It’s not often accompanied by aggregate records by the same shooter. Glenn’s IBS small group record wasn’t just a lucky streak. Glenn not only nailed the historic small group but also recorded multiple IBS aggregate records in 2021. Glenn achieved these IBS Heavy Gun Records using his 6 BRA Light Gun (6mmBR Ackley). It’s impressive. [Editor: These records have stood the test time. Glenn Kulzer holds six out of ten IBS 1000-yard heavy gun records listed on the IBS website. Glenn also broke the Light Gun 20 Target Agg Group Record, but it was surpassed by Tom Mousel. The 1000-yard Benchrest aggregate records are a collection of targets that were shot during multiple matches in a season. This takes all luck out of the game. You must keep your rifle shooting at its best all year. It’s a true test of accuracy. Tom Mousel has set the LG 20-Target Group Agg Record at 4.3825″.
This IBS record group at 1000 yards, as well as Glenn’s others, were shot using Roy Hunter’s 103gr A bullet, Hodgdon’s H4895 powder and CCI BR4 primers. Alpha Munitions’ 6 BRA brass was also used. Glenn uses Lapua brass in some of his 6 BRA rifles. Glenn’s record breaking rifle is a Light Gun, with a setup that is commonly used in Benchrest long range. The rig is a Borden drop-port action and a Bix’n Andy Trigger. The action is glued into a Deep Creek Tracker industrial wood laminate stock, which was the predecessor to the McMillan. The Krieger barrel has a 4 groove, 1:8″ twist Heavy Varmint contour and is chambered for 6 BRA (6mmBRAckley). Glenn’s rifles all have Vortex Golden Eagle Scopes. Glenn says that his Vortex Golden Eagles showed excellent point-of aim stability when tested using a scope tester. The front rest is a Sinclair competition, with an Edgewood front bag and Field & Cave Outfitters front rest plate. It also has a speed screw. Glenn uses Edgewood LRB rear bags for rear support. Loading Procedures For Record-Setting 1,000-yard Shooting
Glenn’s loading procedure is very simple. He sizes the bullets to full length every time and bumps the shoulders about.003″ back. Powder is measured to the kernel and bullets seated using a Wilson seater. Glenn does not anneal brass. He sorts primers according to weight, but does not measure them. He seats primers by feeling, using a cheap primer seating tool. Glenn developed a trim and point recipe for this batch of bullets, based on the group size. Load development takes place at 1000 yards, using the group ladder technique. Glenn’s record load was 30.3 grains H4985 powder, with the 103gr. bullet seated far into the rifling and.005′ of neck tension. This gave a velocity in the 28″ Krieger of 3030 fps. Glenn used Alpha Munitions 6 BRA Brass with a.080″ flash hole all year. This year, he used Roy Hunter’s “A” bullet of 103gr set quite deeply into the rifling. This deep jam is very stable, if you like it. Glenn used CCI BR4 primes and Hodgdon h4895 with.005″ of neck tension. His load produced 3030 fps from a 28″ barrel. NOTE: This “HIGH NODE”, which may not be possible with an average barrel and different brass, is a very high velocity. Many 6 BRA shooters reach a node of 3000+ fps, but you should start low and work your way up. Some 6 BRA barrels max out at 2950 fps with 103-108gr. Report by Alex Wheeler
It was a normal match in June. Nothing special. Saturday was looking like it would be a great day. Overall, it was good, but not great. Sunday was sunny and clear with a bright blue sky. Before the match, I looked through two scopes and it was milky. I would have probably shot that relay with 30-35 power. Glenn Kulzer managed to shoot the best heavy gun group in 1000-yard IBS competition. Glenn Kulzer also broke the six-match aggregate record with that group. This group was not a fluke. This rifle shot well in previous matches at 1000 with small groups. This may be the first time that a small-group record AND an aggregate record were broken by the same rifle in the same year. The ultimate achievement. Glenn shot an impressive 10-shot group of 2.6583″ on June 13, 2021. All shots were in the 10 Ring, resulting in a score of 100. This is now the IBS Heavy Gun 1000 Yard 10-shot group AND score record. This is also included in the new Aggregate Records. About Glenn Kulzer – Rising Star in Long-Range Benchrest Game
Alex Wheeler
Kulzer works as a pharmacist in Dillon Montana. His attention to detail is also required in Long-Range Benchrest. He was a very competitive gunner from the beginning. I have said this many times: benchrest shooting is not an elite sport. Hard work and dedication always lead to success. Glenn took his sport seriously right from the start. He showed a rapid learning curve, and soon surpassed his mentors’ results in matches. Glenn tunes primarily at 1000 yards, using the Deep Creek variant of ladder testing. He will also load the gun and tune it at the range in order to get the best tune possible. It’s all about the hard work of competitors. Glenn’s success is proof that a hard-working, bright shooter can rise quickly to the top.
