The Open Division trophies that he won in 2021 season are shown above. * Are you interested in Rimfire Precision — NRL22 or PRS Rimfire This article is for you. Today’s feature is the CZ 457 of Joshua Thomas. Joshua is the talented host of Pursuit of Accuracy YouTube channel. Josh loves his CZ457, which has been upgraded to include a Timney trigger and Lilja barrel. Josh tells us that you don’t have to spend $3000 to get a precision rimfire. You can win with a $700 Z. Here’s how….” Rimfire Precision Report by Joshua Thomas, PursuitofAccuracy.com

The CZ 457 is a great choice for precision.22LR. It offers outstanding performance for the price. You can choose from a variety of CZ 457 models, ranging in price from $400 to $1000. Each model has the exact same receiver and trigger assembly. Both the standard 457 and “match chamber” 457 barrels have been extremely accurate and well-made. There are many options for aftermarket parts for the rifle. These include triggers and stocks, chassis sytems barrels, bolt knobs and scope rails. The CZ 457’s Best Features

The CZ 457 may have the most modular precision fire rimfire on market. You can easily swap barrels and magazines. The CZ 457’s interchangeable barrel feature is the best. You can shoot.22 WMR to hunt varmints, then switch to a precision shot.22 LR. You don’t need to spend more than five minutes and four screws. The CZ 457 is also a great value. It’s better than a 10/22, but at a fraction the price of high-end custom-rimfire rigs. Josh does have a Vudoo V22 but claims that the CZ 457 provides very similar performance for a fraction of its price. CZ 457 VPT-MTR Equipment List

I have extensive testing done with my CZ457 using both factory barrels and aftermarket barrels. The stock barrel should group most match ammunition at 0.3. at 50 yards. Although this can vary, it is a good guideline. Aftermarket barrels such as the Lilja can reduce these average group sizes to 0.2? or lower. I have shot a few 0.1? I have shot a few 0.1? groups at 50 yards using ELEY Match ammunition. This may not seem like a significant difference at 50 yards, but the variance between the factory barrels and the Lilja increases the further you go. Upgrade Strategies for CZ 457

As I have already mentioned, the CZ 457 can be easily upgraded. First buyers must make a decision. Will they build a CZ-457 or upgrade as they go. A buyer can choose the most reliable 457 model if they want the best rifle. All CZ 457s share the same receiver assembly. Buy a Timney trigger and a Lilja custom bar (e.g. .920? Straight taper) and then upgrade to your choice stock or chassis. If you don’t have an aftermarket chassis, I recommend the Manners stock. The YoDave trigger kits is a great option for those who are looking to upgrade their vehicle as they move on a tight budget. It’s basically a spring-change. My trigger averaged between 9-10 ounces with the YoDave upgrade. I would next buy the Lilja barrel and then a stock. Comparison Testing is important for ammo selection for the CZ 457

Every gun and every barrel are different. This is why you should lot test your gun with different ammo types and lots. Lot testing is essential if you want to improve your rimfire accuracy. There is no substitute for having a lot of ammunition to choose from for your rifle’s first shot. Many men prefer to buy small quantities of ammo than to use a tuner to make the ammunition consistent. It’s cheaper to lot test your rifle FIRST than to waste ammo. Improved Results for Your Rimfire Rifle

First, check your action torque to get the best performance from your CZ457 rifle. This is something that many precision shooters with rimfires overlook. Next, collect as much data information as possible. Find out how long it takes for a cold bore to foul-in and calculate the round count to get the best accuracy. Learn how many rounds you are able to shoot before cleaning (this will vary from one gun to the next). You should also improve your gun handling. Because of the “long barrel dwell” of a rimfire bullet, it is important to follow through. A rimfire bullet is more efficient than a centerfire bullet because it travels 1000-1100 fps. In 22s, accuracy is a lot more dependent on follow-through. My rifles are kept at a light, but constant pressure. Comparison — CZ457 vs. Vudoo V22 Editor: Josh has both a Vudoo V22 and CZ457 rifles. He compares his Lilja-barreled CZ457 to the more expensive Vudoo V22 in this video. You may be surprised by the results.

Here’s the Vudoo V22 mounted with F3R Machine +20MOA. Josh compares the Ruger Precision Rimfire with a CZ457 AT-ONE.22LR. Josh reports: “We demonstrate accuracy at 100 yards and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each rifle. You can see the video to find out which rifle is the best for you if you’re looking for your next.22LR purchase. Favorite Accessories – Timney trigger, Area 419 scope base, and ARCA rail

The Timney trigger for the 457 is the best aftermarket trigger currently available. It weighed in at 5-6 ounces, and it is very crisp. It’s an excellent trigger for Benchrest and PRS/NRL style shooting. I believe the Area 419 Scope Base is the best fit and finish on the market. You can choose from a +15, +30 and +50 MOA version. This allows rimfire competitors to reach 400+ yard without having to hold on. This is roughly 20 Mils of elevation at 400 yards. Another top-of-the-line rail is the Area 419 ARCA rail. The 14? The universally weighted ARCA rail is great for shooting PRS / NRL style. The rail’s weight helps the rifle to settle into the support bags and stabilizes the reticle for better shots off of props and barricades. Upgrades — Installing and Headspacing Lilja Barrrels One of the advantages of the CZ457 platform is its ability to upgrade the barrel. Joshua installs and headspaces a Lilja.22 LR match bar onto his daughter’s CZ457 AT-ONE rifle. This video shows how to set headspace. Josh explains that different ammunition manufacturers use different rim thicknesses for their rimfire ammunition. CCI, Lapua and SK have a thicker rim than ELEY. I prefer to start at.043? I like to start at.043? for my headspace and work my ways up to.001? one at a time. I am currently examining accuracy changes, extraction reliability, bolt close feel, and the feel of it closing. This will vary from barrel to barrel because the chambers are different. I have found.041 for the Lilja. .039 was the best for CCI, SK and Lapua. ELEY was the best. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in small increments. Lilja gives instructions on how to adjust your headspace and how to measure it. Lilja is currently the only barrel manufacturer to offer a barrel for CZ 457 that allows the end user to set the headspace. Reactive targets — Why they are fun to shoot and good for training

Shooting small steel swinger targets is my favorite thing about shooting. Reactive targets provide instant feedback to the shooter that what they have done is correct and working. These are great tools for both novice and expert shooters. To avoid getting too confident with large plates, I recommend that competitive shooters use smaller reactive target sizes. I prefer to limit distance to targets that are 1-2 MOA in size. If the rifle can fire 1? I will use a 2? – 3? Target because I shoot these from a field position, not a bench. This allows me to make small errors and take into account wind calls, but it doesn’t make it easy to miss a bad shot. The Pursuit of Accuracy Video Channel Mission Statement. We push the boundaries of accuracy in rimfire rimfire through education and a shared experience with our viewers. We do not claim professional status. We are just a small group of dedicated marksmen trying to redefine the limits of what is possible with.22 LR rifles. We are committed to our viewers, and the community. We do not conduct paid reviews. This is our standard because the trust and honesty that we share with our viewers are worth more than any paid product reviews. Q: What is the biggest challenge when creating videos?

Josh: The most difficult part of creating rimfire content, is dealing with changing environments. The weather must cooperate with all preparations to film. It is nearly impossible to show the accuracy of a platform where there is a variable amount of wind that affects bullet flight. Q: How has shooting videos helped you and your knowledge about rifles?

Josh: I shoot almost every day of the week because I create content for YouTube. A unique learning environment is created by the increased time I spend behind the camera and the chance to see my mistakes later on. My mistakes are quickly pointed out by thousands of people. The amount of information I have gained in the past seven months of daily rimfire firing has shown me that I didn’t know as much as I thought. You can always learn and improve. Q: What do you enjoy most about making rimfire marksmanship video?

Josh: I find it challenging to make YouTube videos that are as challenging as possible with.22 LR rifles. My audience is well-informed and attentive. This allows me to bring my best game to every range I visit. * Trophies 2021 Open Division Precision Rimfire matches.
