Sunday GunDay: Fall Multidisciplinary Rimfire Rifle ShowcaseTop, a CZ 457MTR; middle Anschutz; bottom Bergara B14R with DPT Chassis.
There are many rimfire designs available, including single-shots, toggle links, bolt guns, lever guns and single-shots. Although they may use the same ammo, they have different ergonomics and looks. This is a testament to human creativity.
You’ll find a thread in our Shooters Forum that showcases rimfire rifles for hunting, plinking, 3P Target Shooting and Silhouette. These are some of the most notable rifles that have been posted in the Forum thread. We also provide brief details about their components.
ARA Benchrest Rifle, Stiller Action, Shilen Ratchet Barrel
Peebles24, a forum member, showcased his cool flame-paint-job on his.22LR benchrest rifle against a scenic background of snow (never too cold for shooting right?). “I had a new rifle built by Mark Penrod at Penrod Precision this fall. Stiller 2500X action, Shilen ratchet barrel, Jewell trigger, McMillan stock, Harrell’s tuner, Sightron SIII 10-50x60mm glass. It’s shot from my Arnold Machine one-piece rest, made locally by Cliff Arnold. I went to the Lapua Testing Center East, and received a case Midas+. Click photo to see ammo testing results.
The gun participated in its first ARA benchrest match, in Wabash (Indiana), in April.
Beautiful MasterClass-Stocked Rimfire F–Class Rifle
This rifle is owned by Forum member Redd. This rig was built for the prone Rimfire F Class-style competition. It features a Shilen Ratchet barrel and Erik Cortina Tuner, which is fitted to a Stiller 2500X Action. It features a gorgeous MasterClass figured Walnut stock, and rides on a SEB JoyPod bipod at the front. The Nightforce 40x45mm Competition optic is used.
CZ 457.22 Magnum Transformed With KRG Bravo Stock
JAS-AS, a forum member, purchased a.22 Magnum CZ that he used as a training rig and added a new stock. He wrote: “I use a CZ457 CZ in.22 Magnum primarily as a trainer — bipod, rear bag type of stuff. It has changed a lot over the past year. The next change will be a Lilja bar. It can shoot spectacularly at times, but not always. Its accuracy decreases when it is minimally dirty. It doesn’t like 40gr round — the groups can open up to 1.5 MOA. It runs at maximum speed of 2250 fps with 35 and 30 grain rounds. That is a twist-rate issue, I believe.
The “Before” photo shows the rifle as it was purchased with a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42mm mildotscope. The CZ 457 has been modified in the “After” photo. JAS-AS notes that “I added a bunch: KRG Bravo stock and Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56mm FFPscope, new bipod, Precision Underground bag, trigger Spring. This setup allows me to shoot at 100 yards and more exclusively. The right-hand picture shows a 9-shot group shot at 100 yards with the rifle. Three-shot groups of 100 were below half-MOA.
Savage Mark II Squirrel/Field rifle
Although this Savage Mark II rifle may not be fancy, it has brought great satisfaction to its owner, Forum member “Ohio Varmint Shooter”. He wrote: “Just a nice gun for the field. It cost less than $200 (without scope). A cheap wooden stock and a thin pencil barrel. My squirrel/field gun. This gun is nothing special, except that it’s lefthanded. It shoots well with standard velocity CCI rounds. I did spend a lot and bought a larger scope. Most scopes with fixed parallax (in this class) are set at 50 yards. Variable parallax was what I needed to set it at 35 yards. It doesn’t really make any difference to me, but I try to get accurate head shots. Although the scope is a bit too large in magnification, it does help with head shots and my aging eyes.
“As a child in the 70s, I dreamed of a left-handed bolt. This gun was a joy to find when I started shooting/hunting again 8 years ago. I had a semiauto 22 as a child, but it was too small for me. It would also spit powder all over my face. — Ohio Varmint Shooter
Tikka T1x Action on Eliseo Competition Machinary Chassis
Here’s Gary Eliseo with his personal Rimfire Match Target rifle with Tikka T1x action. The Competition Machine Rimfire Chassis houses the T1x action. Gary also posted recent 100-yard groups using SK rifle match ammunition in this rifle. Gary is the owner of Competition Machine LLC, which produces the chassis system for this cool rig. He also makes outstanding Across-the-Course and High Power chassis systems for rimfire rifles and centerfire rifles.
Vudoo Action Benchrest Rifle With Benchmark 3-Groove Barrel
This is a beautiful benchrest rig from Forum member FCJIM. It includes a Vudoo 3-groove barrel with Benchmark 3-groove action, Harrell’s Precision tuner and NightForce Benchrest scope. Doan Trevor did the stock work, and FCJIM did all the metal work using a Nevius reamer. This rig loves to shoot ELEY Black ammo and Lapua Midas+ ammo.
Classic CPA Rifles Lever-Action Single-Shot Rimfire Rifle
Last but not the least, here’s a “blast of the past”. CPS Rifles (Paul Shuttleworth) created this classic lever-action single shot. They are a boutique gun-maker that specializes in single-shot rifles, especially reproductions of the Stevens 45 1/2. The receiver is beautifully finished with richly-figured wood. The dual-set trigger system is available. The second trigger is pulled through a long stroke until it clicks. With only a few ounces of pullweight, the second trigger will break the shot (and drop the hammer). This Forum member, “Mills”, from Texas, owns this rig with MPA Vernier-type Tang sights.
