February 13th 2022Sunday gunday: Glenn Kulzer sets 8 1000-Yard Records for 2021Kulzer sets eight new IBS 1000-Yard IBS Benchrest Records, including 6 BRA Rifles
Report by Alex Wheeler
2021 was a great year for 1000-yard Benchrest. Glenn Kulzer, Dillon, Montana, had a season that will be etched in history. Glenn Kulzer, of Dillon, Montana, set eight IBS records at the Deep Creek range near Missoula in 2021 and was also named IBS Shooter of the Year. This is because of the records themselves, not just the record count. Although a small group record may be set in some cases, it is not usually accompanied by an Aggregate record. Glenn’s record small team was not a lucky string. Take this for example: Glenn not only nailed the historic small group but also set multiple IBS Aggregate records by 2021. Glenn also set IBS Heavy Gun records using his 6mmBR Ackley (6mmBR Ackley), Light Gun! It’s quite impressive. 1000-yard Benchrest Aggregate records are a series of targets shot over multiple matches in a season. This takes out any chance of luck. It is important to keep your rifle firing at its best all year. It is the ultimate test of accuracy. Glenn broke the small group record with a remarkable 2.6853. 10-shot group (photo above). This IBS record 1000-yard group and Glenn’s other IBS records were shot with Roy Hunters 103gr “A”, Hodgdon H4895 Powder, CCI BR4 Primers, Alpha Munitions 6 BRA Brass, and Roy Hunter’s 103gr bullet. Glenn uses Lapua brass in 6 BRA rifles. The rig has a Borden BRM drop port action with a Bix’n Andy Trigger. The action is glued to a Deep Creek Tracker stock made of industrial wood laminate. This stock was a predecessor to the McMillan LRB. The Krieger barrel is a 4-groove 1:8?-twist Heavy Varmint contour, chambered for 6 BRA (6mmBRAckley) cartridge. All Glenn’s rifles have Vortex Golden Eagle scopes. Glenn points out that the Vortex Golden Eagles show excellent point-of–aim stability when tested using a scope checker. The Sinclair competition front rest included an Edgewood front bag, Field & Cave Outfitters front rest plate, speed screw, and Field & Cave outfitters speed screw. Glenn uses an Edgewood LRB back bag for rear support. Loading Procedures to Record-Setting 1000-Yard Shooting
Glenn’s loading process for a load is very simple. He takes the full-length size every time, bumping his shoulders back about.003?. Powder is weighed to kernel and bullets are seated using a Wilson seater. Glenn does not anneal his brass. He weighs primers but doesn’t measure them by their dimensions. He seats primers by feeling them using a fairly inexpensive primer seating tool. Glenn developed a trim-and point recipe for this lot based on bullet group size. The group ladder method is used for load development. Load development takes place at 1000 yards. Glenn’s record load was 30.3 grains H4985 powder with the 103gr round seated very far into rifling with.005. Neck tension. This resulted in a velocity of 3130 fps on the 28? Krieger.Glenn shot Alpha Munitions 6 BRA brass all through the year with the.080′? flash hole. He shot Roy Hunter’s 103gr bullet “A” deep into the rifling. NOTE: This jam is very stable, if the barrel likes it. Glenn used CCI BR4 primers with Hodgdon H4895 at.005? Neck tension. His load was able to deliver 3030 fps from a 28? barrel. NOTE: This is a “HIGH NODE” that may be impossible in an average barrel made with different brass. Many 6 BRA shooters have reached a 3000+ fps Node. However, it is advisable to always start low and then work your way up. Six BRA barrels can reach speeds of 2950 FPS using 103-108gr bullets.

Report by Alex Wheeler
It was a regular match for June. There was nothing special about it. Saturday looked like a great day. It was okay, but not exceptional. Sunday was bright and sunny with a clear sky. I checked a few scopes before the match, and it was milky. I would have shot the relay at 30-35 power. Glenn Kulzer managed to shoot the best heavy gun group in 1000-yard IBS competition. Glenn also broke the 6-match Group aggregate record with this group. This rifle shot well in matches with small groups of 1000. This may be the first time that a small group record and an aggregate record have been broken by the same gun. Glenn shot a 2.6583 on June 13, 2021. 10-shot group, all shots within the 10 Ring for a 100 score. This is the current IBS Heavy Gun 1000-Yard 10-shot record and score record. It is also listed in the new Aggregate Records. Glenn Kulzer — Rising Star of the Long-Range Benchrest Game

Kulzer is a pharmacist based in Dillon, Montana. His attention to detail extends to Long-Range Benchrest. He was a competitive shooter from the beginning. I’ve said it many times: benchrest is not an elite sport. Only hard work and dedication can bring you to the top. Glenn was a serious player from the very beginning. He was a quick learner and quickly beat his mentors in match results. Glenn tunes at 1000 yards mostly using the Deep Creek version of ladder testing. To ensure that the conditions are optimal, Glenn will load and tune at the range. It all comes down to the work of your competitors. It all comes down to how hard your competitors work.
