Sunday Gunday: Modern Air Rifles in 3-Position Competition

May 7th, 2023Sunday Gunday: Modern Air Rifles for 3-Position CompetitionThree-Position Air Rifle (3PAR) shooting is the most popular and fastest-growing form of shooting sports competition for junior shooters (High School age and younger). The Civilian Marksmanship Program conducts two primary Three-Position air rifle events. Precision Air Rifle, a shooting style based on Olympic shooting, allows the use of specialized rifles and equipment. Sporter Air Rifle was designed for those who are new to competition or want to compete with the least amount of equipment. Three-Position air rifle provides young competitors with competitive sports opportunities. It can be offered at a variety of ranges that are easily accessible or that can be easily constructed, and with equipment that’s commonly available for affordable costs.

CMP actively promotes Three-Position Air Rifle Shooting as a premier youth marksmanship event by providing low-cost pellets and equipment, as well as training material and competition activities. CMP also hosts air gun events throughout the year for both juniors and adults. CMP facilities host Open Public Shooting events, and matches are held for air pistol and air rifle at the CMP Marksmanship Centers. CMP ranges feature OpticScore Targets, a technology from Kongsberg Target Systems. The Challenger PCP (precharged pneumatic), Air Rifle, is the preferred.177 Sporter Class Air Rifle for competitive marksmanship throughout the country. This includes the Marine Corps JROTC and Army JROTC. It also includes the Air Force JROTC and Navy JROTC. The Challenger is a 3-position competition rifle with a fully adjustable stock. It also features a two-stage adjustable match grade trigger, a hooded aperture front sight, a micro-click, adjustable diopter back sight, a patented ambidextrous bolt, and a Lothar Walther(TM). The 2022 National Air Gun matches, which were part of the Civilian Marksmanship Program National Matches last summer, attracted over 580 entries for air rifles and air pistols. The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center in Camp Perry, Ohio hosted the events.
