February 19, 2023 Sunday Gunday: Henry 9mm Homesteader Carbine. Henry introduced its first semi-automatic firearm in January to great surprise. It was a compact 9mm rifle, the “Homesteader”. This new rifle was unveiled at the 2023 SHOT Show Industry Day at The Range. It impressed all who tried it. It was easy to use, reliable, and fun to shoot (especially when using an optic or suppressor). The Homesteader has a black-finished, anodized aluminum receiver with a sealed walnut buttstock & forearm. Below are five Homesteader test videos, two of which were taken at Industry Range Day. We love the new 9mm carbine. It can be used at a local range with metal targets. This is the main reason we like it. It can shoot a 9x19mm (9mm LUGER) pistol round so it can be used at a variety of ranges that are limited to pistol cartridges. Another advantage is the ability to shoot the same cartridge in your handgun, the 9mm Luger (aka9x19mm). This is a big advantage if you don’t have the time to reload your rifle. 9mm Luger ammo, which costs $0.35 (thirty five cents) per cartridge or less, is one of the most affordable centerfire ammunition you can buy. The Henry Homesteader can also be used with Glock or SIG/S&W mags. This means you can take a magazine from your handgun and put it in the handy Henry 9mm carbine. The stock is also ambidextrous, so it can be used by both lefties as well as righties. Below is a Glock Mag, with factory mags to the right. PROS of Henry 9mm Homesteader
1. Affordable — $928.00 MSRP base version; $959 when you add Glock or SIG/S&W M&P magwells.
2. 9x19mm (9mm Luger), inexpensive ammunition.
3. At 36?, it is easy to handle Overall, 6.6 lbs. (before optics).
4. It can be used at the same ranges and on the same targets as 9mm pistols.
5. Rail can be used to mount Red Dots or other optics.
6. To allow suppressor use, the blued barrel is threaded 1/2×28.
7. The Charging Handle can either be placed on the right or left side.
8. Good trigger right out of the box. CONS of Henry 9mm Homesteader
1. There is only one cartridge available at this time: 9x19mm (9mm LUG).
2. All optics require an aftermarket rail (receiver does not have slots/rails).
3. At this time, length of pull is not adjustable.
4. If scope rail is installed, rear sight will be blocked. See frame below. Henry’s 9mm Homesteader is primarily a fun plinking gun for use within 100 yards. It could also be used for small varmint chores and home defense. Henry says, “The Homesteader can be used for home defense, protecting your livestock from predators, on the truck, at range, or on your back while you explore the deep woods.
Details about 9mm Homesteader Design & Operation. The Homesteader uses expanding cartridge gases to cycle its bolt. The bolt will lock back when the magazine is empty. You can also see through the action port. The trigger guard houses an ambidextrous bolt release handle. The trigger guard houses an ambidextrous bolt release lever. A second version has a magwell to hold Glock magazines. The third model can take Smith & Wesson M&P magazines and SIG Sauer magazines. All versions include Henry 5-round and 10 round magazines.
