There are many options for.22 LR rimfire guns. You can choose from manual actions (such a Winchester model 52), or semi-automatics such as a Ruger 10/22. There are three types of stages: prone, sitting/kneeling and standing. CMP rules have separate classifications for scoped rifles and open-sighted rifles. The matches are enjoyable, the ammunition is cheap, and everyone has fun while improving their marksmanship.
Rimfire Sporter Match Basics

CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match – This is a fun, inexpensive competition that uses.22 caliber sporter guns (plinking and small-game rifles) which are commonly owned by gun enthusiasts. All you need to compete is a basic rifle, safety equipment, and ammunition. You don’t need expensive rifles. The event will be shot with standard sporter-type rimfire rifles no heavier than 7.5 pounds with sights and sling. Semi-automatic or manually-operated rifles are possible. Rifles can be either manually operated or semiautomatic. There are three types of rifles. There are three classes of competition: 1) O Class for open-sighted rifles; 2) T-Class for telescope-sighted and rear aperture-sighted rifles; 3) Tactical Rimfire class which is a.22 caliber A4 rifle or AR15 style rifle. All classes can be fired at 25 to 50 yards on targets with a 1.78. A ten-ring and an 18. outer one-ring. This target is easy to hit even for new shooters, but it can be difficult. Samuel Payne won the Talladega 600 Rimfire Sporter competition. Payne was the first Rimfire Sporter competitor ever to shoot a 600 x 600 score (600-50X in a CMP-sponsored competition) in 2015. Payne scored the perfect score at Camp Butner in North Carolina’s CMP Eastern Games.

CMP offers adaptive Rimfire sporter programs for shooters who have physical impairments.
