All three rifles tested (one in.223 Rem, one in.308 Win and one each in.338 Lapua Magnum) shot slightly better 5-shot groups at 200 yard when a suppressor was fitted. The suppressors did not alter the point of impact. The velocity standard deviation (SD), values were significantly lower when suppressors were in place for all three test rifles. The current NRA rules in the USA prohibit the use sound suppressors. NRA Rule 3.16.1 subsection a states that “Sound suppressors are not permitted for use in High Power competition.” There are also practical issues with suppressors. The heat from a naked suppressor can cause mirage problems. That’s why some shooters cover their cans with a cover. However, suppressors are still commonly found on rifles used in tactical matches or PRS/NRL events. Many of the Steel Safari field challenge matches’ competitors use suppressors.
