SFC McPhail suggests that hunters who are hunting in a treestand should position themselves with your weakside leg pulled up, and your front rail braced against the treestand. Then, you can rest your support arm on your leg. This will give you a solid position when shooting from a standing position. SFC Michael McPhail, Team USA Olympian and ISSF World Cup winner, is one of the best smallbore rifle shooters in the world. McPhail is an avid hunter and enjoys harvesting game using centerfire rifles. McPhail demonstrates how hunters can adapt competition shooting positions in a USAMU video. McPhail shows that hunters can have a better platform if they are in well-established positions. This can ensure a successful hunt. McPhail shows three positions: sitting in a tree-stand, supported prone kneeling, and supported prone prone. McPhail demonstrates the kneeling position first. Michael notes: “I like kneeling. Although it isn’t as popular as prone, it is almost as stable as prone. It allows you to get a little higher off the ground to compensate for vegetation. Start by putting your non-dominant leg towards the target and then lowering to knees on the dominant leg. Wrap the sling around your wrist and forearm, and then take the shot. McPhail shows how to make your backpack a “field expedient”. He shows how to adapt the basic prone position by using the backpack as a support for the front rifle. McPhail suggests that you pull your dominant (strongside), leg forward, and bend at the knee. Michael says this relieves pressure on the abdomen, reduces heart beat effects and improves breathing.
