The progressive reloading press allows shooters to produce rifle and pistol ammunition quickly and efficiently. There are many different Progressive Presses available and a confusing array of options. In this video, the 6.5 Guys and UltimateReloader.com’s Gavin Gear provide an overview of the leading Progressive Presses on the market along with key considerations for precision rifle shooters. This 25-minute video is a must-watch if you are thinking about getting a Progessive to reload rifle ammo. Ten Tips for Reloading Ammo with a Progressive Press 1. Make sure that the brass is clean. Do not mix old brass from range pick-ups with newer brass. 2. Spray a thin lubricant on all cases before the sizing/loading process. 3. Consider priming your brass (with a bench or hand tool) separately before the operation. Before loading powder and bullets, inspect the primers. 4. Wear eye protection while loading cases with the Progressive, especially if you’re priming them. 5. Mark the powder measure/dropper using masking tape with the powder type, cartridge charge weight and the type of powder. Check the cartridge charge mass several times (see below). 6. It is important to NOT seat bullets when you are sizing or adding powder. Weigh the powder to make sure the powder measure is dispenseing the correct amount. This can change by a few tenths after the first few charges as it “stabilizes”. 7. Check the brass for shoulder bulge and bullet seating depth for the first few rounds. Then, check it again periodically. 8. Try to maintain a constant pace and use the handle in the same manner every time. 9. Visually inspect each powder charge (before bullet seating) and use a locking die if you have enough stations on your Progressive Press. 10. Never mix pistol and rifle ammunition powders! You should always remove all powder from the powder-dropping system if you have loaded pistol ammo in your Progressive.
