Most people will recognize Savage Arms as a manufacturer of high-quality hunting rifles or shotguns. Their guns are tough and economical and were designed for serious hunters who value form and function more than aesthetics. They decided to sell Savage in 2019, and not neglect the most popular areas of sales. Concealed carry handguns are one of the most popular. Savage will now make and sell a concealable handgun for the first time since 1912. The Savage Arms Stance is here. RELATED STORY: The Viridian Laser Sight to Savage Arms Stance offers natural operation. Review of the Savage Arms Stance. The Stance was introduced to America’s shooting communities in late December 2021. It is a semi-auto with striker-fired polymer frame and chambered for the 9mm cartridge. It comes with a flush-fit single-stack magazine that can hold seven rounds and an extended magazine that holds eight. (Photo by Alex Landeen). Savage has two backstraps. One is flat and one is arched to better fit the shooter. The Stance is a stylish and trim pistol with subtle but useful frame contours. This, combined with the 18-degree ergonomic grip angle, makes it a very comfortable gun. The grip of the Stance is textured with savage textures. The grip texture feels like emery cloth and should provide a secure shooting grip, even in wet conditions. Shooters can choose from flat dark earth, gray, or black grip frames. The Stance has a serialized stainless-steel subchassis that allows for the possibility of changing the grip color or configuration at any time. The Stance is southpaw-friendly thanks to Savage’s inclusion of an ambidextrous magazine release and slide lock. The Stance is available with or without a manual safety. My sample had a bilateral thumb safety. Savage reduces the size of the manual controls so that the Stance is easy to use for deep cover carry. More details will follow. (Photo by Alex Landeen).Details as Tested. My test samples’ triggers broke at 6 pounds of pressure. Although it’s a little heavier than I prefer, it’s perfect for a defensive gun in which adrenaline and other factors are involved. Savage rounds and polishes the trigger face to ensure painless shooting. The Stance slide is made from stainless steel by Savage. A Melonite process blackens the slide to increase its surface hardness and corrosion resistance. The Cocking serrations are cut from the front and back. The forward slide serrations have ports on both sides through which the bright stainless steel barrel can be viewed. The barrel measures 3.2 inches in length. It is rifled with the common, for 9mm and 1-in-10 RH twist. There is a viewing port at top of chamber that allows users to see if it is loaded. Savage attaches an external extractor to his Stance slide and bevels its ejection port for easy carry. The dual-recoil spring system is used on the Stance to give it enough spring mass to cycle with almost all loads. Savage also sent me a test pistol with upgraded Truglo tritium night sight sights. It has a tritium dot front sight and a U-notch rear sight with tritium lamps. These front and rear sights are great for taking sight pictures. There is enough light on each side of the front sight. The accuracy chart shows the best group. The Stance is far more accurate than I was capable of shooting it. The 6-pound trigger made it difficult for me to align the sights all the way through the press. If I had been more skilled at this task, I believe the gun could fire 1-inch groups at this distance. The USA-Ready range ammunition from Winchester ranked the best with a five-shot group measuring only 1.14 inches. The flat-point FMJ round passed flawlessly through the Stance, and grouped consistently. Black Hill’s 115 grain JHP generated the most energy with 319 fpe, while Hornady’s +P 124–grain XTP round was just behind it with 316 fpe. Savage’s manual states that the +P loads are not intended to cause damage to the pistol’s wear characteristics. The pressures generated by Plus P Plus (+P+), should not be used. Pretty standard stuff. For practice, make sure you have your expensive defense ammunition in a gun. This will save you money and wear on your gun. To test for speed, I also shot the Stance at an iron target to see how fast I could shoot it. It pointed really well and I was able find the sights very quickly once the gun is up on target. Double-taps were slow and the trigger’s reset could have been stronger. The ambidextrous slide stops were so small that I couldn’t drop the slide on a new magazine from either side. You don’t have to worry about this, as a simple tug on the rear of the slide will disengage the slide stop and allow it to run forward, chambering a cartridge. Although my test sample had the bilateral manual safetyties, I found them so small that it was difficult to disengage them without compromising the firing grip. The good news is that the pistol will behave and function the same as any other striker-fired gun. You can shoot by keeping your finger away from the trigger. Easy Cleaning (Photo: Alex Landeen). The disassembly process is simple and doesn’t require any tools. After removing the magazine from the gun’s chamber, lock it in its open position. Next, rotate the disassembly lever downwards. Give the rear end of the slide a quick tug and then let it run off the frame. Do not, repeat, don’t pull the trigger. The trigger is not necessary for the Stance’s disassembly. The dual-spring recoil assembly and barrel can then be removed. This is all you need to do to clean the gun. The Takeaway The Stance performed so well that I wouldn’t discourage anyone from using it to conceal carry. It is accurate and works flawlessly. It is made from premium materials and has a superior finish. Its slim profile makes it easy to carry. The Stance was America’s most popular pistol four years ago! We live in an age of micro-compacts with high capacities. We are concerned that the Stance’s maximum 10+1 capacity may hurt sales. Savage offers 28 SKUs in color and other sight systems. Will the Stance be able compete with more powerful, optics-ready offerings like the Stance? We will only know when it is! For more information, visit SavageArms.com.
