Prometheus Design Werx is the top choice when it comes to the most innovative EDC products on the market. Prometheus Design Werx is known for their outstanding designs and high-quality construction. They also use high-end materials. The company produces knives that are as high-quality as its other products, in addition to the standard EDC offerings. The SPD edition of the STSB folder is an example. The Prometheus Design Werx SPD STS-B carbon fiber folder. Drawing inspiration from the Loveless Chute Knife’s design, the SPD STS-B addresses Harry Archer’s original needs. Archer was the original person to commission the chute knife idea to Loveless. Archer was looking for an all-purpose edged tool that could be used to cut parachute lines, aid wilderness survival, and for personal safety/defense. Archer’s vision is now embodied in a highly-detailed, purpose-driven framelock folder that pays homage to the legend. The SPD (Special Projects Division), STS-B rides on a titanium frame and uses carbon fiber or G-10 handle scales. You can customize your G-10 version by adding two sets of interchangeable scales to suit your personal preferences. The G-10 and carbon-fiber scales have five fullers on both sides for extra retention. The scales are just under two-thirds of the length of the grip and feature an integrated titanium bolster design. The grip itself is slightly swollen on each side to provide comfortable hand-filling ergonomics. The bolster also has a finger notch, a slight upper and lower protector to help with comfort and retention. The 3.50-inch blade is made from premium bohler M390 and has an aggressive swedge that runs along the length of its clip point. The SPD STS-B is very penetration-friendly. The blade is secured by a ceramic ball detent. It is then brought to bear on ceramic bearings with bronze cages and a stainless-steel pivot. It can be opened to its full length of 8.1 inches using dual thumbstuds with ambidextrous Strontium Glow-In the-Dark cabochons. It is secured by the titanium frame lock and a steel insert to ensure its durability. The SPD STS-B is carried inside the pocket with the pocket clip made of titanium billet. This pocket clip can be used for right-hand tip-up. In The Field Its performance is stunningly matched by the Prometheus Design Werx SPDS-B. I used the knife to perform several functions that I felt were appropriate for its purpose. This includes utility and field tasks. It will be able to perform admirably in self-defense. I started with wilderness survival. I found a small, dried maple circle, cut a piece of it, and then whittled the end to make a wedge. I then switched to a larger round, and carefully began a split at the end. Once I had my wedge in place, I used it for the final split of the round. Because wood is very hard on the pivot, it is not recommended that you baton a folding knife to cut wood. Making a wedge will help you keep your knife safe in an emergency situation. I then took one of the pieces and carved an ember stick from it. The edge geometry worked well for this and I was able get some very fine curls. The spine and handle were jimped to retain the tool, while the rounded spine made it more comfortable. Next, I made a quick test stick and performed various reductions. The clip point tip was ideal for prying out large chunks of wood for finer detail. The edge was also very precise in carving fine notches. Overall, the SPD STS-B was extremely comfortable and easy to use during this process. I then cut up a half-inch of climbing rope and a nylon military belt. Even after previous tests, I was still able to cut everything cleanly and quickly with no snagging nor tearing. Home Utility After testing its wilderness survival capabilities, it was returned to me for basic utility tests. It has been with me for a few months now and I have used it for almost everything. For my reporting, I wanted to do some more specific tests. To test the tip’s penetration power, I placed a few pieces of heavy-duty leather on top of a catalogue. The tip was then stabbed through the leather and into a catalog. It penetrated approximately.5 inches deep. I was confident that the tip would penetrate organic matter easily with very little resistance. I wanted to test the edge and see if it held up so I cut some corrugated cardboard. The edge was sharp enough to cut through most of a large box with no problem. It did tore at some points, but that was probably due to the box being difficult to hold on to. Finally, I received new Nexbelt EDC gun straps and had to resize them. This required me to cut them shorter. The one is made of heavy-duty leather and the other is made from heavy-duty nylon. Instead of using heavy scissors, I used the SPD STSB. It worked great. It cut each one perfectly and glided right through the material without any problems. Functional and Comfortable The SPD STS-B has been functional and comfortable for me over the past months. Although I have used Prometheus Designs Werx knives before, this seems to be a hallmark. This knife is high-quality and purpose-driven, just like all the company’s EDC items. They are also very popular and sell out quickly, just like all the company’s EDC items. Prometheus Design Werx has decided not to make the SPD STSB with carbon fiber or the G-10. The company prefers to make small runs and then move on. A Linen Micarta version of the product was just released. If I was you, I would visit the website to order one right away. They will sell quickly, just like everything else from the company.
