TESTED: The Taurus GX4 Optic ready T.O.R.O. Fights like a Bull

Enter to Win a Free Gun Friday from IWI > IWI’s soon-to-be released Masada Slim Pistol and Caldwell Emax Shadows Pro Close If you had told me a decade ago that a Taurus pistol would be my daily carry, I would have laughed at you. Here I am, with an optic-ready Taurus GX4T.O.R.O. (Taurus Optic Ready Options) – I have it holstered in my waistband. It all began with me evaluating Taurus GX4 and finding it to be a reliable all-day gun. RELATED STORY Taurus GX4 – The New Micro Compact Just Rewrote The Book on Taurus. The Optic Ready Taurus GX4 O.O.R.O. I am one of the many who have shot one. Taurus released their GX4 T.O.R.O. and I was excited to test it. It’s a great carry and has replaced my GX4 daily. Gun Details It feels solid in your hands and the aggressive stippling makes it feel great. Overall, the pistol is well-designed and looks smart. There were two options for palm swells: one with a low swell and one with a high-swell rearstrap. The high-swell was my preference, as it fit me better. The trigger is, I dare to say, Taurus’ best trigger for a striker-fired pistol. There is a little bit of take-up. This is also true for the reset. It’s a quick, short trigger. The sight consists of a white-dot front with a serrated, drift-adjustable back. Taurus kept it simple because most shooters will use the sights they like. Although I was disappointed that it didn’t include a fiber-optic front I can still install it. The barrel measures 3.06 inches and has a satin black DLC treatment. The slide is coated with a gas nitride. The DLC treatment reduces friction and wear, and increases corrosion resistance. The slide treatment improves surface hardness. The Teflon coating was applied to the remaining operational control parts. The GX4’s capacity is 11+1 and it comes with two magazines. Taurus will offer an 11-shot extended magazine and a finger extension as an a-la-carte option. For those who reside in restricted areas, it will also include a 10-shot magazine. Takedown and Availability: The GX4 does not have a takedown lever. Instead, it has a pin/screw on its right side. Use a flathead screwdriver or a 9mm shell rim to turn the pin counterclockwise. Before you start, make sure that the magazine has been removed and that the pistol is empty. The slide will come off when you press the trigger. The GX4 T.O.R.O. The GX4 T.O.R.O. retails at $468. The Taurus GX4 T.O.R.O. is the most compact pistol capable of mounting a red dot. It is also one of the most affordable. It’s not expensive or a Taurus, so don’t discount it. I’m willing to bet that you will be pleasantly surprised. Sights and Red dots I needed to upgrade my sights in order to be able to carry the Taurus GX4 optic ready daily. I turned to XS Sights for their DXT2 standard dot, which is a perfect fit in this micro-compact 9mm. The author preferred the Riton 3 Tactix MPRD2 red-dot (right), while Andy Grossman, the photographer, preferred the Holosun. (Photo by Andy Grossman). The glow dot on the front sight absorbs low-level light before it becomes dark enough to see tritium. The rear v-notch has an invisible white line with tritium in the middle that aids in seeing sight picture. This combination is intuitive and quick, which is crucial in stressful situations. They can be found at xsights.com. As I mentioned, I tried the Holosun He407-GRX2 and Riton3 Tactix MPRD 2, both on the Taurus. The green dot on the Holosun is 6-MOA. It has 12 brightness settings and a run time up to 50,000 hours with a CR1632 lithium battery. It also has a motion sensor and locking function to “wake up” green dots. It is made of 7075 aluminum and is waterproof. Andy Grossman, a photographer, preferred the Holosun over the Riton. It retails for about $260 and you can learn more at Holosun.com. (Photo by Andy Grossman). I preferred the Riton 3 Tactix MRD 2 to the Holosun on Taurus. It had a slightly larger window which I found the red dot easier. The Riton has a 1-MOA red spot. It features auto-brightness, shake-awake, and auto-off after 3 minutes. It uses one CR2032 battery, has a runtime of approximately 50,000 hours, and is waterproof and shockproof. The MRSP cost is $350 and you can learn more about it at RitonOptics.com. Xecutive Carry. It can be difficult to find a holster that fits your favorite carry gun in the best position. It’s even harder to find one that is comfortable. It’s even more difficult to find one that can be worn comfortably in multiple positions. This is the holster unicorn. I am here to inform you that the holster unicorn is actually a N8 Tactical Xecutive holster. Photo by Andy Grossman. The unique Spartech Royalite Holster Grade material makes this holster stand out. It is very soft and comfortable against the skin. I find AIWB uncomfortable, but the Xecutive made it much more bearable. I recommend buying one or two, especially at a MSRP of $50. N8 Tactical describes the Xecutive to meet the needs of serious EDC users. It can accommodate micro red-dots, suppressor-height or co-witness iron sights. According to N8 tactical, it can be used with multiple options depending upon changing clothing needs or carry situations. It was also a perfect fit to the Taurus GX4 T.O.R.O. It’s a “match made to heaven.” Learn more about the unicorn holster at N8Tactical.com. Lead Downrange I have fired more than 1,000 rounds 9mm through my Taurus GX4 Taurus GX4 T.O.R.O. Without any malfunctions, red dots flying off the slide, or the pistol locking up. I tried the standard palm swell at first. I found that I was shooting too low and the pistol didn’t feel right. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the GX4 felt in my hand after switching to the high-swell. It was easier to aim the pistol at target and it wasn’t as difficult to shoot low. The Riton red-dot made me faster on target than the non T.O.R.O. GX4. However, my accuracy did not improve much. It is possible that my group sizes could improve if I slow down a bit. Unfortunately, I was unable to test that. The Michigan winter weather had other plans. The slide’s serrations felt more aggressive than the original GX4. Taurus representatives confirmed that no changes had been made to the serrations when I spoke to them. I’m not sure if this is what I am thinking, but the serrations of the T.O.R.O. seem to be consistent. model felt better. Still in Love I was impressed with the original GX4 but I am equally impressed by the T.O.R.O. opto-ready model. The GX4 T.O.R.O. It has taken over its predecessor as my daily carry. Yes, I trust my Taurus pistol with my daily carry. There is no better compliment than that. You don’t have to believe me, shoot your own GX4.
