It is a fact that the more violent crime rises within Democrat-run municipalities, the more gun control advocates place the blame on legal gun sales. They also love to blame the NRA, and similar organizations such as the Second Amendment Foundation. Despite the fact that there is no evidence to support either of these claims. DRGO (Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership), released a study about the subject. The study shows no correlation between legal gun sales, violent crime, and the sale of legal guns.
DRGO Study – Violent Crime not Driven by Legal Gun Sales
Media and gun control advocates often blame law-abiding gun owners whenever there is a shooting. The story is then distorted because the facts don’t fit the narrative. A new study, Legal Firearm Sales at the State Level and Rates for Violent Crime, Property Crime and Homicides, directly contradicts their claims.
The study was conducted by DRGO, a project from the Second Amendment Foundation. It shows that legal gun sales don’t pose a problem. According to the study, national murders declined as firearm sales increased over the 1999-2015 period.
The study concludes that “a naive national model showed that increases in firearm sales were associated to significant decreases of multiple crime categories.” A more robust analysis that used generalized estimating equations estimates on state-level data showed that firearm sales did not correlate with any changes in crime variables.
The DRGO study is based upon a detailed, objective analysis of 50 states from multiple entities. These include the National Instant Background Check System and the Department of Justice Uniform Crime Reporting Program. They also include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System.
Dr. Robert Young, Executive Editor of DRGO, says that this confirms what many of us already know, who have been following all the research done by economic, criminology, and medical experts. Lawful gun ownership is not related to homicides or other crime rates. The constant drumbeat of antigun activists and researchers is a house built on sand.
The report concluded that “robust analysis doesn’t identify an association between increased lawful gun sales and crime or homicide rates.” It is not clear if efforts to limit illegal firearm sales would have an effect on crime, homicide or injuries resulting from firearm violence.
This is not his first study on the topic
Dr. Mark Hamill (MD, FACS, FCCM) was the one who conducted the study. He is an assistant professor of surgery at Nebraska, a gun owner, and a former law enforcement officer. This is not his first research on the topic.
Hamill and co-authors published another study in 2019. The study’s title is State Level Firearm Concealed Carry Legislation and Rates Of Homicide and Other Violent Crime. The study examines data from 30 years, each state by state. The results are almost identical to those of the most recent study.
According to the study, “All states adopted concealed-carry legislation during the study period with a trend toward less restrictive legislation.” After accounting for year and state, there was no significant association between changes from restrictive to nonrestrictive carry legislation and violent crime indicators. The results were not affected by adjusting for poverty or unemployment.
Gun control is therefore a ruse that does not actually reduce violent crime. We are continually misinformed by the gun control lobby. They are also unwilling to discuss facts and data. This makes it appear that gun control is about something completely different from what they are selling.
The study’s conclusion states it all: “This study did not show statistically significant associations between the liberalization state-level firearm carry legislation over 30 years and the rates homicides or any other violent crime.” Other targets should be investigated for possible intervention by policy efforts that aim to prevent injury and reduce firearm-related violence.
If they are serious about public safety concerns regarding violent crime, it’s time to look elsewhere. Failure to do this will only lead to more violent crime.
These DRGO Studies are of vital importance
As I said, we face real disinformation from powerful media. It can be difficult to combat. We have data and facts to back us up with studies like those from DRGO. The gun control lobby may try to gaslight as many people as they like. They can’t change the facts, no matter how hard they try.
We are however up against an adversary who has no moral attachment to honesty. Understanding the realities of legal firearm ownership and how they work is crucial.
I’ll leave you with the words and thoughts of Alan M. Gottlieb, Executive Vice President of SAF.
“DRGO” is an important project of The Second Amendment Foundation because anti-gun billionaires like Michael Bloomberg fund research that attempts to portray guns and gun ownership in a disease.
