The tragic 4th of July mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois raises the question: Why didn’t the red flag state prevent this tragedy? The perpetrator didn’t even show any warning signs. What are they actually looking for? Although it was obvious that he was a danger to society he legally purchased firearms in one the most restrictive states of the union.

What are Red Flag Laws? Are They ripe for abuse?

Illinois Red Flag Law fails to prevent 4th of July Mass Murder
I feel like the entire gun control agenda is becoming a feature-scrolling operation. Every piece of legislation is supposed to be the one that will stop gun violence. But, it fails miserably, and gun violence rises. The solution is obvious: more gun control. Wash, rinse, repeat.
The Chicago Tribune asks, for example, if Illinois’ current draconian gun law is sufficient.
“A day after a gunman shot 70 rounds into a Highland Park Independence Day parade crowd, questions and concerns began to surface about Illinois’ high-capacity firepower availability. Also, whether existing laws regarding background checks are sufficient to protect the public.”

They feel that even with the most stringent laws in the country, they are still not enough. Even though laws are already in place, they do not prevent gun violence from rising in the state. They haven’t yet figured out that gun violence is worse when there are more gun laws.
In fact, gun violence is highest in the states, cities and territories with stricter gun laws. It is beginning to look like gun controls don’t work. This latest incident is a clear example of how ineffective it is.
A Clear and Present Danger
New information is emerging about the suspect in the Highland Park massacre that left seven people dead. He’s the poster boy for red flag laws, as you can see.
ABC 7 Chicago reports that Crimo attempted suicide in April 2019. Five months later, police responded to Crimo’s threat to kill his family members, leading them temporarily to seize 16 knives and other weapons. He also allegedly sent out threats via social media.

The Chicago Tribune also highlights the potential for domestic violence. “But an emerging picture, including chilling online videos about gun violence and an attempted suicide, as well as a threat to a family member with knives. Raised questions about Illinois’ gun permit system.”
This sounds very similar to what red flag laws were supposed identify. Red flag laws were supposed to identify people who would not commit mass gun violence.
It wasn’t enough to stop the suspect from obtaining his gun license or trigger a firearms restrain order. Three months after his interactions with the local law enforcement agency, he applied to his FOIA (firearm owners identification card). He legally purchased his firearms about a year later.
Yahoo News UK reports that “Crimo passed four background screenings in the purchase of his guns. All of them were conducted in 2020 and 2021 well after the 2019 incidents which drew attention to police, according to the state police.”

Let’s just make sure we are all clear. Red flag laws are meant to identify those who pose a danger to society and prohibit them from owning firearms. Red flag laws were not effective in one of the most gun-controlled countries in the union.
Legislation fails before it begins
Both the Senate and House recently passed the Bipartisan Safety Communities Act, which has red flag laws as its cornerstone. Just over a week later, Illinois shows the world the inequalities of these same laws. It was a temporary victory for gun grabpers and the red flag law narrative. They keep trying, but reality keeps getting in their way.
If none of these events triggered the Illinois red-flag law, then who are red-flag laws really looking for and why? What’s the next piece that will seal the deal and prevent more gun violence?
It’s time for us to stop believing that gun control works. We need to look at the real problems in our society. Anyone have any thoughts about mental health?
