The Self-Illuminated Meprolight M21 is Always On

Red dot optics are great for their speedy target acquisition. However, they need to be maintained. It is a good idea to have a schedule for changing your batteries. There’s always the chance that you might forget to change the batteries or get a bad one that dies sooner than expected. An optic that doesn’t require batteries, such as the Meprolight Mepro M21 allows you to set it up and forget it. The Meprolight Mepro M21 is made of durable aluminum and can withstand harsh environments. Your optic is also designed to withstand water submersion, drop testing to MIL SPEC certification requirements. The M21 was actually developed for the Israel Defense Force (IDF), and is still in active duty today. It has been combat-tested and has proven to be resilient in adverse conditions. The dual illuminated 1X reflex vision provides all-light, instant aiming without the need for batteries. Fiber-optic illumination during daylight allows the M21 to draw available ambient light for bright reticles. The sight also uses tritium at night to provide a bright reticle even in low or no-light conditions. According to the company, the transition from one system to the other is instantaneous, and automatic. The M21 has a large 30mm window that allows for more FOV. This allows you to shoot with both eyes closed. Five amber-colored reticle options are housed within the window. You can choose from Bullseye, Bullseye with a 4.3 MOA dot or X, 5.5MOA circle with a dot or the Triangle. According to the company, Triangle and 5.5 MOA circles/dots are the most popular. The battery-less operation means there are no buttons, on/off switches or maintenance. Editor’s note: While the self-illuminating feature is great for 24/7 operation, it comes with a price. The optic uses tritium at night as its light source, so it will eventually lose its illumination. According to the company, the illumination with tritium is guaranteed for ten more years. It might not be an issue, as who knows what technology will be available in ten year’s time, and you might be ready for a switch anyway. It is important to remember that the sight has an expiration date of ten years. The Meprolight Mepro M21 can be purchased now at a MSRP of $479.99. Meprolight.com has more information.
