The people of Ukraine can own firearms but they do not have the right to carry them. The Ukrainian government realized the imminent invasion and approved a draft law to ease restrictions. The law would allow Ukrainians to carry firearms and use self-defense. The draft law’s authors stated that “the adoption of this law is fully within the interests of state and society.” They also noted that the law was necessary due to “existing dangers and dangers for Ukrainian citizens.” While firearms are legal in Ukraine, Breitbart reports that “Ukraine’s gun laws have been strictly enforced, poorly written, and had the net effect of convincing most Ukrainians private gun ownership was not worth it, even though a large portion of the public receives firearms training in school. This move adds nearly 200,000 troops to the defense of the country. According to National Review, Zelensky stated that he did not believe there was a need for a general mobilization of civilians. However, he said that he had issued a decree allowing conscription of reservists in a special period. The government has issued weapons to anyone who is willing to defend Ukraine.
