Fiber optics are fantastic, but they still require some ambient light to function. Tritium, a radioactive element, glows by itself and doesn’t require any external light source. It is safely contained in a vial and has a life expectancy of at least 10 year. Many companies offer a Tritium-based front sight that can be used with either a standard or specialized rear sight. If you have a semi-common defense gun with replaceable sights, chances are that someone will make Tritium sights. There are front sights available for revolvers from some companies. Let’s take a look into the current offerings of some of the major players in the night sight market. AMERIGLO(r), CAP Night Sights AMERIGLO offers many different styles of pistol night sights for common defense pistols. I have a set with their Protector sights mounted on my old work SIG as well as my optics-mounted Glock 43X slide. The CAP (Combative Action Pistol), sights are the company’s latest offering. They feature a tritium dot in green, with an orange or Lumigreen band up front and a steel back with a non-Tritium or Lumigreen line at the rear. The sights are rugged and provide a clear, simple sight picture. They are available for select Smith & Wesson and Springfield Armory, Sig Sauer and Glock pistols. Hi Viz LITEWAVE LiteWave H3 Hi Viz’s LiteWave LiteWave (r) Express sight uses both Tritium as well as HIVIZ Litepipe technology. This allows you to see bright, clear sights in all lighting conditions. All steel sights use fiber optic rods to collect light in the day and in dim lighting. They can also be combined with a Tritium capsule to use in low light. The rear sight is Express-style and has a shallow V notch to allow for quick sight alignment. The standard height H3 sights don’t require special hoists. The H3 is compatible with a wide variety of pistols including Glock, HK and CZ, Smith & Wesson and Springfield Armory 1911s and some Ruger and Smith & Wesson Revolvers. Meprolight Hyperbright(tm), sights MEPROLIGHT(r), an Israeli company, has a wide-based international clientele that includes military and law enforcement agencies as well as civilians. Its Hyper-Bright ™ sights can be used with a variety of handguns. These sights are also good if you have a different handgun than a Glock or SIG. You could have a Canik or FN, for example, or a Taurus. They have a three-dot sight system that includes a bright-colored ring front sight in green, yellow or orange, along with a basic, black rear sight with two Tritium dots. Night Fision Optics Ready stealth Sights Night Fision may be a newer player on the sight market but it’s not new to Tritium. Night Fision is a Detroit-based company with a long history in the automotive industry. Cammenga, the sister company, has been making Tritium compasses in the U.S. Army’s service for over 30 years. Night Fision uses all-steel sights that have a Perfect Dot domed lenses for a sharper image. It is surrounded by a colored pigment, not just a painted ring, to ensure it doesn’t crack or chip. There are many sights available in standard and suppressor heights. The company also offers sights designed by Chris Costa or Paul Markel. Optics Ready Stealth Sights are the newest style. These sights can be set up to provide a 1/3 co-witness and don’t clutter the sight. They still offer a very useful backup set or irons. Optics Ready Sights come in three colors: Orange, Black, and Yellow. Rear sights can be either black-ringed tritium or blank. The sights are brighter than other competitors because they contain 30% more Tritium. The set screw allows you to lock the sight down easily without having to hammer the sight in place. Night Fision pistol sights made in the USA from Swiss Tritium and stainless steel bodies. They are contoured to be comfortable on skin and clothes when your gun is close to your body. Trijicon DI(tm), Night Sights Trijicon is a veteran player in the pistol night sights industry, dating back to 1985’s Gen X era. A variety of night sights have been manufactured by the company and have been used in a wide range of law enforcement and military applications. The DI is the company’s latest entry in the night sight market. It uses an industry-first interchangeable fiber optic front view. You can change the color and shape of the front sight rings, as well as the fiber optic tube. This allows you to personalize the sight with the best color combination. The fiberoptic comes with a Tritium front and rear dot. This combination gives you a sight that is visible both day and night. This is a clever system that Trijicon has been using for decades. The DI is currently available for Glock, Smith & Wesson and Springfield Armory pistols. Its other sights can be used with a variety of pistols so don’t be surprised to see more options. They were what I used for my duty and off duty guns at the office for at least 15 year. They combine fiber optics with Tritium to create a sight that works in all lighting conditions, from bright sunlight to dark night. The fiber optic tube is hidden from the front to ensure that it doesn’t reveal your position in the dark. The TFX Pro’s steel body is CNC machined and has a low profile and is anti-snag. They will work with most standard holsters without any issues. Truglo claims that the Tritium element is protected in a capsule that is virtually indestructible. It’s impervious against oils, chemicals, cleaning solvents and ultra-sonic cleaning. My experience with mine and solvents has been excellent for more than a decade. XS Night Sights R3D & Minimalist tritium Nightsights XS has two newer products, the R3D & Minimalist Tritium Nightsights. The R3D Night Sights feature a 3-dot tritium (notch, post, sight image), and a Minimalist Tritium (post, sight picture). The R3D Night Sights have a Tritium front sight. It also has a proprietary photoluminescent orange and green Glow Dot. The dot, which absorbs ambient light and glows under low light, is also luminescent. This makes it brighter and more focused than the rear Tritium dots. The Minimalist is a simpler sight picture. The Minimalist has a Tritium front spot and a serrated steel rear sight with an U notch. XS sights are rugged and easy to install. They offer a clear, uncluttered sight picture, especially the Minimalist model.
